Kawhi Leonard Just Reminded Everyone Why He's a First-Ballot Closer

Kawhi Leonard went absolutely nuclear tonight, dropping 45 points on 15-20 shooting and 9-10 from the line. 63.5 Yahoo points. Clippers 153, Timberwolves 128. This wasn't close.

Here's the thing about Kawhi that gets overlooked in the regular season: the dude is a closer. He won MVP. He's All-NBA First Team. When it matters, he shows up differently. Tonight felt like a playoff game for LA, and he treated it like one.

Player ESPN FP Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg +/- Pts
Kawhi Leonard 81.0 63.5 45/5/5 28.3/6.4/3.8 +16.7
Anthony Edwards 49.0 43.9 36/2/5 29.4/5.0/3.7 +6.6
Darius Garland 44.0 34.2 21/1/6 17.9/2.4/6.7 +3.1
Derrick Jones Jr. 38.0 32.3 12/4/1 11.3/3.0/1.2 +0.7
Jordan Miller 30.0 30.1 14/3/7 9.4/2.9/2.0 +4.6
Bennedict Mathurin 30.0 29.9 22/2/3 18.3/5.6/2.3 +3.7
Isaiah Jackson 31.0 28.7 9/6/3 6.3/5.3/0.8 +2.7
Kris Dunn 37.0 28.4 5/2/6 7.8/3.3/3.7 -2.8
Julius Randle 16.0 23.2 11/6/4 21.1/7.0/5.2 -10.1
Naz Reid 21.0 20.6 18/3/0 13.9/6.3/2.3 +4.1

The Clippers Role Shuffle Hit Different

Darius Garland went for 34.2 Yahoo FP off the bench in 23 minutes. That's 1.49 FP per minute, which is absolutely elite. 21 points, 6 assists, 5 threes on 8-13 shooting. He's not your typical bench guy and that's becoming the story here. When LA needs pace and playmaking, Garland is their answer now.

Derrick Jones Jr. added 32.3 Yahoo FP, and this is where depth shows up in a blowout. 4 steals in 28 minutes is the kind of game-long activity that wins you fantasy weeks, not just nights.

The Clippers didn't just win, they executed. Role players got efficient minutes and finished clean. That's playoff basketball in March.

Anthony Edwards Fought His Tail Off for Nothing

Anthony Edwards had 43.9 Yahoo FP on 36 points. That's a monster game that completely doesn't matter because his team lost by 25. He shot 11-17 from the field and 11-12 from the line. Those are the numbers of a guy trying to drag his team back.

Julius Randle, though. This one stings if you own him. 23.2 Yahoo FP on 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists in 27 minutes. That's a -10.1 point differential from his season average, and it shows how bad the Timberwolves were defensively tonight. When you're losing by 25, your role players disappear in box scores even if they're trying.

Naz Reid went for 20.6 Yahoo FP (18/3), which is solid bench production, but again, meaningless in a blowout context.

The Real Story: Minnesota Got Exposed

Minnesota came in hot this season and the Clippers just said no. 128 points allowed isn't a disaster, but it's what happened around it. Rudy Gobert only pulled 5 rebounds. 20 Yahoo FP in 26 minutes isn't terrible, but that's not Rudy. He was out-worked defensively.

Jaden McDaniels was fine (14.9 Yahoo FP) but inefficient. The Wolves' stars had to work way too hard for too little return, and that's a roster construction problem, not a single-game fluke.

Who's Actually Worth Adding

This is the thing nobody talks about. Jordan Miller had 30.1 Yahoo FP as a third-stringer. 14 points, 7 assists in 29 minutes. If you're in a deep league and looking for bounce-back upside, he just showed he can run an offense when given the chance. Bench him against good teams, play him against rotations LA can bully.

Kyle Anderson went +0.0% in ownership after getting 12.7 Yahoo FP off the bench in 17 minutes. He's barely owned, and in leagues looking for guards, he's worth a speculative add. Clippers are rotating like crazy right now.

The Bottom Line

If you own Kawhi, you're laughing. If you own Randle or Gobert, you got schooled. The West is tighter than we thought, and LA just proved they can execute when it matters. That's fantasy relevant because it means Kawhi is getting the volume and usage you need down the stretch.

Edwards did everything right and still took the L. That's basketball.
