Hornets Steal One, But Brandon Miller's Breakout Is the Real Story Here

Final: Hornets 110, Hawks 107

Look, I'm not happy about this one. As a Hawks fan, watching my squad lose a close game to Charlotte stings, especially when we had our chances. But let me put the homer hat down for a second because there's something more important happening here from a fantasy perspective, and it's not what you might think.

Brandon Miller Just Put Everyone on Notice

Here's the headline nobody expected: Brandon Miller went absolutely off for 31 points on efficient shooting (10-26 FG, 5 threes, 6-6 FT) and landed 48.8 Yahoo fantasy points. That's 10.4 points above his season average in a single night.

This is not a one-game fluke situation. Miller's been trending up for weeks, and tonight he showed why scouts believe in his ceiling. The kid can score. He took 35 minutes, he was aggressive, and he made shots. If you own him, you're sitting pretty. If you don't, start eyeing him as a buy-low candidate once this game settles into the waiver wire mindset.

The volume is there. The efficiency showed up. This is what "breakout game" actually means, not just one good night.

Jalen Johnson Did His Thing (Just Without the Assists)

Jalen Johnson put up 60.1 Yahoo points with a complete stat line, 19/13/9 across 34 minutes. He was a force on the boards and orchestrating the offense. The assist total (-0.8 vs his avg) was slightly down, but that's nitpicking when a dude gives you triple-double potential with rebounds.

Here's what bugged me as a Hawks coach though: Johnson had 4 steals and only played 34 minutes. That's the kind of efficiency that should've kept him on the floor more. We needed him down the stretch, and he was doing everything right defensively. But yeah, 60 fantasy points is 60 fantasy points, and you're taking that every night.

The Real Story: Nickeil Alexander-Walker Got Exposed

Nickeil Alexander-Walker is trending in the wrong direction, and I'm calling it early. He played 40 minutes, shot 2-13, and still managed 25.6 Yahoo points mostly from free throw volume (5-5 FT) and activity. That's not sustainable basketball.

His season average is 20.1 PPG, and tonight he scored 10. That's a -10.1 point differential. He was a league-wide add this week at +0.3%, which tells you people are believing in his potential. Don't fall for it based on tonight. The efficiency isn't there, and when you're taking 13 shots and only making 2, that's not a numbers game, that's a red flag.

If you grabbed him off waivers, I'd be looking to move him. The Hawks need more from that position, and Alexander-Walker isn't delivering right now.

Dyson Daniels Is Becoming What We Thought He Could Be

Dyson Daniels put up 28.6 Yahoo points with 21/3/4 in 25 minutes. That's +9.4 against his season average. Yeah, limited minutes, but he was efficient as hell (9-12 FG), and as the reigning All-Defensive First Team selection, he's supposed to be playing meaningful basketball down the stretch.

The kid's averaging 11.6 PPG for the season, but tonight he showed glimpses of what he can do when he's aggressive. This is the kind of game that makes me think he's ready for more minutes, not fewer. Keep him in your lineup. He's gonna eat.

Charlotte's Role Guys Stepped Up (Don't Overreact)

Grant Williams had a weird night: 1-9 from the field but 5-7 from the line and 8 boards in 32 minutes. That's 25.1 Yahoo points even though his actual shooting was brutal. Those games can be deceptive. If his role becomes "rebounder and free throw setter," that's not consistent enough for deeper leagues.

PJ Hall got 16 minutes and put up 11/10 with 25 fantasy points. That's promising, but it's 16 minutes. Don't think he's suddenly your nightly play. One good game doesn't equal role change.

One More Thing: CJ McCollum Did His Thing

CJ McCollum had 36.2 Yahoo points with solid playmaking (8 assists, -1.8 PPG vs avg). He's reliable. Not flashy, but reliable. Nothing to panic about, nothing to get hyped about. He's a hold.

The Verdict

Charlotte wins a game they should've lost, but the real fantasy storyline here is Brandon Miller's emergence and Nickeil Alexander-Walker's decline. If you're managing rosters, those are your action items. One's ready to be a consistent option, and one's losing value by the game.
