Stephon Castle Just Took Over the Entire Bay Area (And Your Waiver Wire)
Look, I'm gonna be real with you. I watched the Spurs cook my Mavs last night and it hurt. 138-125 loss in San Antonio is never fun, especially when it came down to one team just straight up playing better basketball. But here's what matters for your fantasy lineup: Stephon Castle just put on one of those performances that makes you wonder if you're watching a video game.
The reigning Rookie of the Year went absolutely nuclear. Let me put this in perspective.
| Player | ESPN FP | Yahoo FP | Tonight | Season Avg | +/- Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stephon Castle | 91.0 | 78.4 | 40/12/12 | 17.1/5.2/7.0 | +22.9 |
| Marvin Bagley III | 47.0 | 48.4 | 16/12/2 | 10.3/5.8/1.5 | +5.7 |
| Victor Wembanyama | 39.0 | 39.7 | 16/11/1 | 23.9/11.1/2.7 | -7.9 |
| Devin Vassell | 35.0 | 32.8 | 17/4/6 | 14.4/3.9/2.4 | +2.6 |
| Brandon Williams | 37.0 | 29.6 | 18/3/4 | 12.7/2.9/3.6 | +5.3 |
| Dylan Harper | 34.0 | 28.3 | 11/4/5 | 10.7/3.3/3.5 | +0.3 |
| Max Christie | 34.0 | 28.1 | 17/3/3 | 13.3/3.4/2.2 | +3.7 |
| Klay Thompson | 30.0 | 27.2 | 19/1/2 | 11.6/2.4/1.4 | +7.4 |
| Carter Bryant | 28.0 | 26.0 | 11/5/0 | 3.0/1.9/0.2 | +8.0 |
| Naji Marshall | 23.0 | 25.1 | 6/3/5 | 14.7/5.0/3.0 | -8.7 |
Castle dropped 40/12/12 on 79% shooting from the field and 70% from three. That's not just good. That's literally the stat line you see and think "wait, is this real?" He was +22.9 on his season average in scoring alone. This dude turned into a point god for one night and San Antonio rode that wave all the way to the W.
Here's the thing though: this might be a mirage. Castle's been solid this year (17.1 PPG season average), but going from your normal output to 40 points isn't exactly repeatable week-to-week. He got hot, the Mavs' defense looked confused about who was supposed to guard him, and he just kept letting it fly. On 31 minutes of run time.
If you're thinking about adding him, pump the brakes unless your league is super deep. In 10-12 team leagues, you probably have someone else chewing up the same production floor with more consistency. But if you're in a 14+ team league and he's still on waivers, grab him for this run. The Spurs clearly trust him in crunch time.
The Marvin Bagley III Surprise (Yeah, Really)
This is the waiver wire narrative that actually matters. Marvin Bagley III came off the bench for Dallas and posted 48.4 Yahoo FP on 16/12/2. That's not elite, but for a guy averaging 10.3/5.8, this was a +5.7 PPG explosion while staying efficient (6-14 shooting, knocked down a three).
More importantly, he grabbed 12 rebounds in 24 minutes. That's a rebounding rate that shouldn't be ignored. The Mavs were getting outmuscled on the glass and Bagley was one of the few bright spots.
Ownership went from basically zero to 3.1% after this game, which means he's about to show up on every waiver wire claim priority next week. I'm not saying he's gonna be a league winner, but if your team needs rebounding and secondary scoring, he just proved he can do both. Grab him in leagues where he's still available.
Victor Wembanyama Laid an Egg (It Happens)
Here's where I get petty because my team lost. Wembanyama is an All-NBA Defensive player and one of the best centers in basketball, but he went 16/11/1 on 24% three-point shooting. That's -7.9 from his season average.
Look, one bad game doesn't mean anything. The dude's elite defensively and still pulls in blocks and rebounds at a rate most centers can't touch. But on a night where his team really needed him to go off offensively, he just kind of played fine instead of great. For a fantasy perspective, this is a reminder that even the best players have off nights. Hold him obviously, but don't panic if he dips for a game or two.
The Naji Marshall Mystery
Marshall is confusing me right now. He put up 6/3/5 but shot 1-8 from the field. How do you play 25 minutes, take 8 shots, and still contribute? The answer is steals (3 of them) and perfect free throw shooting (4-4). That's enough to land him 25.1 Yahoo FP, but he's also -8.7 from his season average.
The Mavs have been running some weird lineups this year and Marshall seems to be in a rotation where he's valuable for defense and playmaking more than scoring. In standard leagues, he's not a priority add. In deep leagues where steals matter, he's already spoken for. Skip him.
The Klay Effect Still Works (Mostly)
Klay Thompson hit 4 threes on 19 minutes of playing time. That's the Klay special. 19/1/2 with 27.2 Yahoo FP. Is it sustainable? Not really. But every few games he reminds you why he was part of championship teams. He's a hold if you've got him, but don't reach for him on waivers. He's gonna have 8-point games next to his 25-point games. That's just how aging specialists work.
The Move You Should Actually Make
Add Brandon Williams in deep leagues if he's available. The man went 18/3/4 and shot it efficiently (8-12). That's not a one-game fluke type of stat line. That's a player who's getting consistent run and can put the ball in the basket. Dallas is gonna need scoring if they want to make noise down the stretch.
Also keep your eye on Carter Bryant. I know, weird name you probably don't recognize. But he went 11/5/0 in just 17 minutes with 3 three-pointers. That's a +8.0 PPG spike from his season average. If the Spurs start running more of him, he could be a deep league flier. Not for this week, but watch the rotations.
The Bottom Line
The Spurs are better than we thought. Castle had the game of his season. Bagley showed flashes. The Mavs? We'll bounce back, but last night was rough. For your fantasy team, the takeaway is simple: don't overreact to one hot game from Castle, but do grab Bagley and Williams if they're sitting on waivers. This is what the waiver wire is for.
See you next game. I've got some moves to make.
