Jalen Johnson Goes Nuclear, Hawks Still Can't Close Out Indiana

Look, I'm gonna be straight with you because that's what we do here. Jalen Johnson absolutely went off for 67.4 Yahoo fantasy points, and if you had him on your squad tonight, you're riding high. But the Hawks lost 129-124, and that stings in a way that fantasy points can't completely cover up.

Let me break down what actually happened, because this game tells two different stories depending on which team you're looking at.

Jalen Johnson is Playing a Different Level Right Now

33 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals on 41.4% shooting from deep. That's a triple-double with elite efficiency and defensive activity. Johnson came in averaging 23.1/10.5/8.0, and he absolutely demolished those numbers by nearly 10 points and two assists.

Here's what matters for your league: This isn't a one-off. Johnson has been consistently excellent for weeks now. He's not just putting up numbers, he's doing it across the board. 36 minutes of work, and he's creating for others (10 dimes), cleaning up glass (12 boards), and getting stops. If you have him, you're keeping him. If you don't, this is the kind of player you need to be looking at in trades. He's not flashy enough that everyone's on him yet, but the production is All-NBA caliber stuff.

The loss stings because he gave the Hawks everything. This isn't on him.

Andrew Nembhard's Breakout Matters

Nembhard dropped 26/6/10 with 5 threes for 48.2 Yahoo points. He came in at 17.6/3.0/7.5, so we're talking +8.4 points, +3 boards, and +2.5 assists. That's not just exceeding expectations, that's completely shifting how we think about his role.

The All-NBA Third Team inclusion last year for Tyrese Haliburton meant Nembhard was always the second option in Indiana's offense. But if Nembhard is going to operate like this when given the space, he's a league-average to above-average fantasy starter in 12-team formats. Not a back-end bench guy. An actual contributor.

The 5 threes though? That's the question. 5-19 shooting overall, so he wasn't exactly efficient, but the volume is there. Keep an eye on whether this is the new normal or a hot shooting night. If Indy leans on him like this again, he's worth a hold even in shallower leagues.

Mouhamed Gueye Just Did What?

Mouhamed Gueye put up 15 points, 4 boards, 3 steals, and 1 block on 31 minutes. That's +10.1 points versus his season average of 4.9. We're talking about a bench big who just turned in legitimate fantasy production.

Look, this is a deep-league story, not a 10-team one. But if you're in a 14+ team league or playing in some kind of points league where free throws matter, Gueye went 7-9 from the line and grabbed a decent rebound share. He's averaging 4.9 points for a reason, but on a night when the Hawks were fighting, he stepped up.

Worth monitoring, but don't panic-add him everywhere. This is exactly the kind of performance that burns waiver wire adds because one game convinces people he's relevant. He's not. Yet. But he's interesting.

Aaron Nesmith Quietly Had His Best Night

Nesmith went 8-10 from the field for 23 points, 3 threes, 4-4 from free throw. That's +9.2 points versus his 13.8 season average, and it came on ultra-efficient shooting (80% FG).

This is the kind of performance that makes you think about sell-high opportunities. Nesmith's been a solid role player, but 23 points on 10 FG attempts is elite efficiency that he doesn't maintain. If someone in your league got excited about tonight and wants to package him into a trade, I'd consider moving him. He's better as a league-average contributor than a featured scorer, and one night of 8-10 shooting doesn't change that.

The Pacers Role Players Showed Out

Jay Huff (16 points, 6 boards, 2 blocks, 3 threes) and Jarace Walker (11/10/4) both exceeded expectations. Huff's +7.5 points versus his 8.5 average is meaningful, and Walker's +5.7 rebound surge shows he's doing the dirty work.

These are your glue guys. They're not gonna win you a week, but they won't lose you one either. Fantasy value is in there for deep-league bigs who need board help, especially Walker if you need rebound floor. Not sexy, but solid.

Dyson Daniels Took a Step Back

Dyson Daniels (Most Improved last year) had 8/7/7 with 2 steals, but that's -3.6 points versus his 11.6 season average. He didn't flop, but he also didn't elevate when the Hawks needed him.

This is one game, so don't panic. But with Johnson dominating and Nembhard controlling the offense, there's less ball to go around. Daniels is All-Defensive caliber, so his defensive value matters, but fantasy-wise he's dependent on volume. On nights when Johnson and the Pacers backcourt are this engaged, Daniels becomes a secondary option. Keep him, but manage expectations.

The Bottom Line

The Pacers won because they had more depth production and Nembhard stepped up when it mattered. Jalen Johnson put on a show for Hawks fantasy owners, but it wasn't enough. That's the game.

For waiver moves, nobody's getting dropped or added in normal leagues based on this. Gueye is interesting in DFS for next time, but he's a one-game wonder in season leagues. The story here is that Johnson continues to be a league-winner, Nembhard is more useful than we thought, and the Pacers have enough supplementary pieces to stay in games even when their star doesn't play.

Teaching my students about this game tomorrow. When you can't control the outcome, dominate the process. Johnson did that. Sometimes it's just not enough.
