Hawks 132, Pacers 116: The Dyson Daniels Breakout and Why Your Waiver Wire Priorities Changed

Look, I'm not gonna pretend this wasn't a beautiful night to be a Hawks fan, but here's what actually matters for your fantasy teams: this game just told us something we needed to hear about a few guys on different trajectories. The Hawks beat Indiana by 16, and while that's nice for my Peach City bias, the fantasy story is way more nuanced than "good team won."

Let me show you the damage:

Player ESPN FP Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg +/- Pts
Pascal Siakam 51.0 51.8 26/9/4 23.8/7.0/4.0 +2.2
CJ McCollum 61.0 50.1 23/8/7 18.7/3.5/3.7 +4.3
Dyson Daniels 56.0 46.5 22/5/9 11.8/6.7/6.2 +10.2
Jalen Johnson 38.0 43.4 15/7/6 23.0/10.4/7.9 -8.0
Jarace Walker 45.0 39.9 12/7/3 9.7/4.3/2.0 +2.3
Nickeil Alexander-Walker 40.0 37.1 21/3/3 20.3/3.5/3.5 +0.7
Andrew Nembhard 32.0 33.5 6/5/13 17.4/2.8/7.4 -11.4
Onyeka Okongwu 27.0 29.0 12/10/2 16.2/7.9/3.3 -4.2
Christian Koloko 36.0 27.3 12/4/1 3.0/3.2/0.7 +9.0
Aaron Nesmith 25.0 23.4 18/2/4 13.5/5.0/2.3 +4.5

Dyson Daniels Just Made Your Waiver Wire Decision Easy

Real talk: Dyson Daniels put up 22/5/9 on 10-15 shooting and that "+10.2 vs season average" isn't a typo. This is the All-Defensive Second Team guy finally showing up like it on the stat sheet. 46.5 Yahoo points in 34 minutes is the kind of night that changes ownership percentages, and it already is (he's up to 81.9% owned, the league is noticing).

Here's what matters though: this wasn't a fluke. Daniels had 9 assists and only 1 turnover. He was efficient. He played more like the guy who won Most Improved Player last season and less like someone treading water. If he's still available in your league, you're not using your waiver position. Period.

Jalen Johnson Got Humbled (And That Matters)

Jalen Johnson coming in at 15/7/6 looks fine until you see the "-8.0 pts vs avg" and the 5-19 shooting. This is what I tell my players about volume: shot attempts don't equal points. Johnson took 19 shots and only made 5 of them. That's 26% from the field. You can't do that and expect to stay fantasy relevant when your season average is 23 ppg.

The Hawks won comfortably, so there's no excuse here. Johnson had opportunities and didn't execute. He's still getting the usage (34 minutes), but one stinker doesn't tank a guy. Watch if this becomes a pattern. If Johnson drops to 22% shooting over the next week, then we panic. One game? Variance.

CJ McCollum Is Quietly Your Safest Bet

CJ McCollum went 9-15 with 5 threes and 23/8/7 on the night. That's 50.1 Yahoo points and only a "+4.3 vs avg" because his season average is already elite. This is what consistency looks like. You're not gonna get viral highlights, but you're getting professional, efficient production every night. 27 minutes is nothing. This dude is lowkey one of the most reliable fantasy contributors on Atlanta.

The Pacers' Assist Collapse

Andrew Nembhard had 13 assists but only 6 points on 3-10 shooting. That "-11.4 pts" screams it: Indiana got blown out, their offense stalled, and Nembhard couldn't manufacture points. He got the assists because that's his job, but when you're down 16 at home, the assists don't matter much for fantasy purposes. He still scraped 33.5 Yahoo points, but the foundation is shaky.

Pascal Siakam was the only Pacer who looked like he belonged on the same court. 26/9/4 with 51.8 Yahoo points shows a guy fighting through a loss. He's still your best option from Indiana when they have the ball.

The Waiver Wire Reality

Nickeil Alexander-Walker is already at 81.9% ownership. Don't bother. He had a solid game (21/3/3) but this was his season average night, not a breakout. The ownership has already priced him in.

Christian Koloko went 6-6 for 12 points and 4 boards. That's 27.3 Yahoo points on minimal minutes (16). Is this sustainable? Almost never. But if your center situation is desperate in a 14-team league, you watch him next game. One perfect shooting night doesn't equal a three-point specialist out of nowhere.

What This Means Moving Forward

Dyson Daniels is the real add if he's still sitting. CJ McCollum continues being proof that "boring" fantasy players are boring because they're reliable. Jalen Johnson had a bad game but not a career-ending one. And if you're holding Jalen Johnson, you hold him through this. That's just basketball.

The Hawks looked like the better team. The Pacers looked tired. And your fantasy lineups benefited if you had Atlanta's guards. Simple as that.
