Wolves Steal One in Denver: Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle Lead the Way

Minnesota 119, Denver 114

Look, sometimes the reigning MVP doesn't get it done and your whole night still goes sideways. That was Denver last night. Nikola Jokic put up a line that would make most of the league quit (24/15/8), but it wasn't enough. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves figured out how to win a road game, and if you had the right guys on your roster, you're feeling pretty good about life.

Here's the top 10:

Player ESPN FP Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg +/- Pts
Nikola Jokić 50.0 54.0 24/15/8 27.7/12.9/10.7 -3.7
Anthony Edwards 48.0 52.0 30/10/2 28.8/5.0/3.7 +1.2
Jamal Murray 50.0 47.9 30/7/7 25.4/4.4/7.1 +4.6
Julius Randle 43.0 42.8 24/9/6 21.1/6.7/5.0 +2.9
Donte DiVincenzo 40.0 34.4 16/7/6 12.2/4.1/3.8 +3.8
Christian Braun 37.0 33.1 16/3/5 12.0/4.8/2.7 +4.0
Naz Reid 20.0 23.3 11/9/1 13.6/6.2/2.2 -2.6
Tim Hardaway Jr. 22.0 22.6 16/3/0 13.5/2.6/1.4 +2.5
Aaron Gordon 20.0 22.4 8/7/4 16.2/5.8/2.7 -8.2
Ayo Dosunmu 22.0 20.3 9/4/5 14.8/3.4/3.6 -5.8

The Winners

Anthony Edwards (52 Yahoo FP) - Ant went off for 30 points on solid efficiency (10-25 from the field, 7-9 from the line) while adding 10 rebounds. That's 5 extra boards above his season average, which is the kind of thing that happens when you actually compete on the glass all night. This wasn't a lucky night either, he was +1.2 on points and +5.0 on boards. He's an All-NBA guy for a reason, and when he gets aggressive early, the whole Wolves offense looks different.

Jamal Murray (47.9 Yahoo FP) - This is the dagger nobody talks about. Murray dropped 30 and dished 7 dimes on 11-25 shooting with six threes. He was +4.6 on scoring and basically hit his season average on assists, which means he was efficient and in control. All-NBA Second Team caliber Murray showed up and took over the fourth quarter when it mattered. If you had him, you won your matchup last night.

Julius Randle (42.8 Yahoo FP) - The man put up 24/9/6 on 7-14 shooting with 8 free throw makes. Randle was +2.9 on points and +2.3 on boards, which tells you he was just a little bit better than we normally see. Nothing crazy, nothing unsustainable, just a solid All-NBA Fourth Team performance that helped push Minnesota over the hump.

Donte DiVincenzo (34.4 Yahoo FP) - Here's where the Wolves' depth hurt Denver. DiVincenzo only played 30 minutes but went 6-9 from the field, 4-9 from three, and added 6 assists. That's +3.8 on points and +2.2 on assists. He's not carrying your team, but in a tight game, those 34 fantasy points are the difference between cashing and getting close.

Christian Braun (33.1 Yahoo FP) - Denver's bench piece stepped up when his team needed it most. 16 points on 5-9 shooting with 5 steals and 2 steals is weird flex energy, but that's what happened. He was +4.0 on scoring compared to his season average. Braun was actually the Nuggets' best option off the bench tonight, which says something about how Denver's roster is built.

The Letdowns

Aaron Gordon (-8.2 pts vs avg) - This is the one that stings if you have AG. The man played 36 minutes and gave you 8/7/4. That's not bad on paper, but he was 3-9 from the field and basically invisible when the Nuggets needed bucket-getters. Gordon is usually a 16+ points guy, and last night he couldn't find a groove. Denver needed more from the power forward spot, and Gordon didn't deliver.

Rudy Gobert (-8.9 pts vs avg) - The Defensive Player of the Year candidate got absolutely worked last night. Two points on 1-4 shooting? That's not what you're paying for. Gobert pulled down 7 boards and had 2 steals in 27 minutes, so it's not completely washed, but when your All-Defensive center can't score on the Nuggets' bigs, that's a problem. He was a total non-factor on offense, and that's not sustainable for a guy who should be dunking on everyone.

The Real Story: Denver Just Wasn't Good Enough

Here's the thing about last night, and I say this as someone who watches a lot of Nuggets basketball because they own half my league. Denver had Jokic, Murray, and decent minutes from Braun and Hardaway Jr., and they still lost by five at home. That's not a fluke, that's the Nuggets not executing down the stretch.

Jokic only shot 8-20 from the field. That's not typical MVP stuff. He was a minus-3.7 on scoring compared to his season average of 27.7. Meanwhile, the Wolves had five different guys score in double figures (Edwards, Murray, Randle, DiVincenzo, and Braun all did it). That's championship basketball. That's what beats superstar-dependent teams.

The rebounds tell the story too. Edwards grabbed 10, Randle grabbed 9, and Naz Reid pulled down 9 as well. Gobert only got 7 in 27 minutes, and Aaron Gordon was useless on the glass. When your center can't control the glass against a depleted Denver front court, your team doesn't win close games.

What This Means Going Forward

If you have Anthony Edwards, you're keeping him and not panicking. He's an All-NBA guy and last night proved he can take over games. His 30 points weren't a one-off, they were a statement.

If you own Jamal Murray, same deal. The assist number (7) was right in his wheelhouse, and his scoring bump was legit. He's a plus matchup against any team that doesn't have elite perimeter defense.

Jokic owners shouldn't panic either, but understand that on nights when his shooting is off like this (8-20), he's still viable, just not MVP-level. -3.7 on scoring is within normal variance for a guy who averages 27.7 on volume.

The waiver wire play here is weak. Kyle Anderson got added league-wide but only played 4 minutes with 0 points, so that's just noise. Nobody from this game is breaking out of low ownership into the must-add category.

Bottom line: Wolves won because they had more functional scorers and Denver relied too heavily on Jokic getting his usual. On the road, in close games, that's a losing formula. For fantasy purposes, the Wolves players all cashed and the Nuggets players mostly didn't, which is exactly how it should've gone.
