Spurs Survive Blazers Test, but It's Wembanyama's Breakout That Matters for Your Roster

The Spurs edged Portland 111-98 on the road, but if you're checking box scores to see if this changes anything about your fantasy team, the answer is yes. Not because San Antonio won, but because Victor Wembanyama just showed us exactly why he was drafted to change franchises.

Let me break this down for you because it matters.

Wembanyama Just Went Full Generational

Victor Wembanyama dropped 35 points on 13-21 shooting and added 5 threes. That's 44.5 Yahoo FP. But here's what actually matters: he was +10.0 points above his season average. The dude went from his normal 25 PPG to 35. On 62% from the floor. On a road game against a team trying to stay in the playoff picture.

This isn't a one-night thing either. He's all-defensive caliber, he's 7'4", and now he's showing us he can take over scoring duties when it matters. If you have him, you're holding. If you don't have him, you're not getting him. But if you're in a league where he somehow fell, this is your reminder that last year's All-NBA Third Team selection just put on a masterclass.

The Spurs won because of him. Full stop.

Deni Avdija Went Harder Than Anyone

Look, I've got to give it to Deni Avdija. 30 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists in 39 minutes. He shot 12-21 from the floor and hit 2 threes. That's 53.5 Yahoo FP, the highest on the board tonight.

What's wild is he was +5.8 points above his season average. The Blazers lost by 13, but Avdija played like he was trying to carry them to victory anyway. This is the kind of performance that makes you check waivers to see if some league mate dropped him. Spoiler: 92.5% of leagues own him, so he's not going anywhere. But if he somehow fell into your lap recently, you're cooking with the right player.

The Reason Portland Lost (and It's Not What You Think)

You'd think a 13-point loss means the Blazers got outscored everywhere. Not true. Jrue Holiday was a different animal tonight: 9 points but 11 assists for 32.3 Yahoo FP. He was -7.3 on scoring but absolutely did his job as a floor general. The problem was everyone else couldn't capitalize.

Scoot Henderson tried (18 points on solid 7-11 shooting, 26.1 FP), but the supporting cast didn't show up. Donovan Clingan went 2-7 for 13.9 FP. Shaedon Sharpe scored just 10 on 13 attempts. When your best scorer after Avdija is a bench player trying to will the team, you lose on the road.

Here's the fantasy takeaway: Holiday still delivered value even in a loss. His assists are real. But if you've been thinking about moving him because the Blazers are a low seed, tonight didn't make that decision easier. He's still a tier-one point guard, but he needs teammates to convert.

The Deep Bench Guys Who Ate

Robert Williams III (24.2 FP) and Luke Kornet (21.7 FP) both had those random contributions that pop up in blowouts. Williams grabbed 6 boards in just 16 minutes. That's bench energy that shows up some nights and disappears others. Don't get cute and add him thinking this is a trend.

Same with Stephon Castle. The reigning Rookie of the Year went 4-13 but was 8-8 from the line for 32.9 FP. Kid's a floor general and he's only going to get better, but 17 points on that volume isn't something I'm chasing next week.

What's Actually Changed

If you own Wembanyama, you're feeling great. If you own Avdija, you just had your best night all year from him. If you own Jrue, you know he's consistent even when the team struggles.

The real story here isn't the Spurs won. It's that Wembanyama is capable of nights like this, and now everyone knows it. That matters for playoffs if you've got him. You're not selling low on a guy who just proved he can score 35 on efficient shooting.

Portland's still going to be scrappy because Holiday and Avdija are on that team, but this loss stings because nobody else showed up.
