Evan Mobley Just Reminded Everyone He's DPOY for a Reason

Final: Cavaliers 122, Jazz 113

Okay, so here's the thing about Evan Mobley that nobody talks about enough, and I'm gonna say it right now, especially after watching him go absolutely nuclear last night. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year isn't just a lockdown guy. He's a two-way freight train who was quietly one of the best value picks in your draft, and last night proved why.

Player ESPN FP Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg +/- Pts
Evan Mobley 77.0 68.9 34/17/3 18.4/9.0/3.6 +15.6
Kyle Filipowski 58.0 49.5 20/10/5 11.1/7.0/2.5 +8.9

Bez Mbeng 24.0 22.1 5/3/5 4.8/3.6/3.5 +0.2

Mobley's 68.9 Yahoo points on 29 minutes of work was genuinely disgusting. 34 points, 17 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks. He shot 15-21 from the field. This isn't a lucky night. This is what happens when a guy who averages 18.4 PPG and 9.0 RPG decides to absolutely impose his will on the paint. The +15.6 points over his season average? That's not noise. That's Mobley reminding you why he made All-NBA Second Team last year.

The move here is obvious if you're looking to sell high on someone: Donovan Mitchell put up 44.9 Yahoo points with 34 points on 10-18 shooting and 11-12 from the line. That's solid and he's probably going to finish as an All-NBA First Teamer again. But Mobley is the real deal moving forward. If someone in your league got cute and benched him this week, you already know who's winning your league.

The Jazz Couldn't Tank Even If They Tried (And Two Young Guys Went OFF)

Listen, I'm not gonna sit here and pretend the Jazz loss was some dramatic collapse. Utah put up 113 points. That's fine for their pace. But what's worth noting is Cody Williams had the kind of breakout night that makes you go check the injury report to see if someone got hurt ahead of you.

+17.9 points above his season average. The kid was 11-22 from the field with 26 points in 36 minutes. His season average is 8.1 PPG. This isn't a fluke shooting night either, he was efficient and got real minutes. If Williams is sitting on your wire in a 12-team league, grab him today. In 10-team? He might already be gone. That's a 4.0 PPG jump from his baseline with improved volume, and Utah's gonna keep running him out there.

Kyle Filipowski was also sneaky good at 49.5 Yahoo points. 20 points, 10 boards, 5 assists on 7-12 shooting with 4 threes in just 24 minutes. The +8.9 points over his season average (11.1 PPG) might look modest, but that per-minute efficiency is exactly what fantasy managers should be hunting for on the waiver wire. He's hitting threes and not clogging the lane. That's real for a big man.

Brice Sensabaugh with the solid 34.3 Yahoo points was more of a "he did his job" night. 18 points, 4 boards, 5 assists on 6-12 shooting. The +3.7 points above his average means he was exactly as productive as you'd expect, nothing more. Not a reason to add, not a reason to drop. Just a guy playing his game.

Harden Had the Weird Night (And That Matters)

Here's where it gets interesting. James Harden put up 46.2 Yahoo points, which is great on paper. But the story underneath is the actual fantasy lesson here. 13 points, 6 boards, 14 assists on 4-9 shooting. He was down 10.8 points from his season average (23.8 PPG) but up 5.8 assists from his 8.2 average.

This is what happens when role guys get less volume but more responsibility as facilitators. Harden's still an All-NBA Third Teamer, but Cleveland's got weapons now. He's gonna have nights like this where the assist total pumps him up even though his scoring's down. That's fantasy volatility. If you're holding Harden, you already know the floor is solid because of the playmaking upside. The ceiling just looks different than it did two seasons ago.

Who's Actually on the Waiver Wire Worth Grabbing

Ace Bailey (+0.3% ownership to 56.3% owned) is getting adds for a reason. 27.9 Yahoo points on 19 points, 2 boards, 5 assists with three threes. That's +5.5 from his season average, and more importantly, he's getting real minutes (35). He's already north of 50% owned so the window's closing, but if your league is lazy, scoop him. He's a three-point specialist who's actually contributing elsewhere.

Bez Mbeng had a sneaky useful night at 22.1 Yahoo points. 5 points, 3 boards, 5 assists with 3 steals in 28 minutes. That steal total is elite. Not a starter for your team, but a wire dart that occasionally cashes is exactly what you need in March.

The only person getting dropped league-wide who you should maybe think about is Jarrett Allen (-0.2% to 83.5% owned) because he didn't play tonight. Check if it's injury or just load management. If it's injury, let him clear. If it's load management, don't panic. He's still 83.5% owned for a reason.

The Real Takeaway

Mobley just put a masterclass on tape for why you should never sell low on defensive studs who also run the offense through them. He's not gonna go off for 70 Yahoo points every night, but nights like this remind you why he made All-Defensive First Team. That's your league winner in March if he gets healthy minutes and the matchups line up.
