Rockets Sneak Past Pelicans in Thriller, But the Real Story is KD's Takeover

Houston pulled off the 107-105 upset at home last night, and I'm still buzzing because this wasn't some boring grind-it-out win. This was a straight-up shootout where the best players in the building went nuclear and the deeper bench guys decided the game in crunch time. Let me break down what happened for your lineups.

Player ESPN FP Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg +/- Pts
Kevin Durant 58.0 51.7 32/6/5 26.0/5.5/4.5 +6.0

KD Put the Team on His Back

Kevin Durant dropped 32 on 13-24 shooting and finished with 51.7 Yahoo points. That's a straight-up vintage performance from a guy who's been steady all season but not necessarily explosive. What made this special is he did it efficiently, went 3-4 from three, and played 39 minutes when it mattered most. The +6.0 against his season average sounds small until you realize he was basically his best self on a normal night. If you have KD, you're not panicking. This is the guy you drafted to get you buckets when everything tightens up.

DeJounte Had the Game of His Life

Dejounte Murray though? He went absolutely unhinged. 35 points on 14-18 shooting in just 30 minutes is the kind of line that makes you question reality. That's a +15.2 from his season average in HALF a game's worth of time. Even more wild, he's been averaging 19.8 PPG all season, so this wasn't sustainable tonight. He got hot and stayed hot. For fantasy purposes, this is a one-off performance, but it's also proof he's got another gear when he needs it. Don't sell low on him because of one magical night, but also don't expect 35 points every time NOLA plays Houston.

The Depth Story: Amen and Capela Do Work

Here's what got me hyped as a Rockets guy. Amen Thompson put up 48.4 Yahoo points with 23/12/8 in 40 minutes. That's +5.2 from his season average with a massive +4.3 rebounding night. He was everywhere. The assists could've been higher if the role players were hitting, but this is exactly who Amen is when you need primary offensive pressure. He's a 5-category guy who can fill holes anywhere on your roster.

And Clint Capela? Dude only played 21 minutes but went 4-6 from the field, grabbed 5 rebounds, and blocked 4 shots for 32 Yahoo points. That's a +5.2 from his season average despite limited time. Capela's ceiling in this system is wild when Houston needs rim protection and lob opportunities. If there's a playoff push ahead, remember this game. Sometimes the backup center is the X-factor.

Reed Sheppard is Legit a Sleeper

Reed Sheppard went for 18/5/3 with 5 threes in 32 minutes. 32.5 Yahoo points. He's been averaging 13.5 PPG but looks comfortable in this offense. The +4.5 scoring night against his average is real production. More importantly, he shot 6-14 and went 5-3PM, so the shot was falling. In deeper leagues, this guy is worth stashing if he's still available. He's got that hot-hand quality that can carry you through a week.

The Pelicans Couldn't Close

Zion Williamson had a fine game with 21/5/1, but -0.4 from his season average tells you something. He was met on Houston's interior and couldn't impose his will in the paint like usual. Herbert Jones went 2-12 from the field which is brutal for a guy who averaged 9 PPG and grabbed 9 boards for 30.3 Yahoo points. The rebounding saved his night, but that shooting line screams efficiency problems. Trey Murphy III was even worse, going 5-15 from the field despite getting 36 minutes. His 27.7 Yahoo points came almost entirely from assists and boards, not the volume shooting you want to see from a scorer averaging 21.9 PPG. That's a -7.9 from his average, and it matters.

The Real Takeaway

This game came down to bench depth and efficiency, not star power. Both teams had their lead guys go off, but Houston's role guys stayed solid while New Orleans' shooters went cold when it mattered. Jabari Smith Jr. was forgettable at 16/5/3, but he was there. Karlo Matković popped off for 21.8 Yahoo points in limited action. Sometimes that's enough.

If you own any of the Houston players, hold tight. If you're looking to grab Reed Sheppard off waivers in deeper leagues, do it now before everyone else sees that tape. DeJounte owners, enjoy the win but keep expectations grounded. And if you're stuck between Pelicans pieces, be careful because the shooting dried up fast.

This was a fun one to watch, ngl. Close game, good basketball, and fantasy relevance across the board. That's the type of night that reminds you why we do this.
