Lakers Survive Pelicans Scare, But Your Fantasy Roster Got Messy
Lake Show pulled out a 110-101 grind-it-out win last night, and if you had guys on both sides, you probably left points on the table. This wasn't a fantasy showcase. It was defensive basketball that punished volume, and some of your usual studs got exposed.
Let me break down who actually showed up and who's got some explaining to do.

LeBron Still Being LeBron
LeBron James (21/7/7, 40.9 Yahoo) came to play and didn't really deviate from his season script. He stayed right at his averages, which at this point in his career is honestly the play. 8-12 from the field, efficient, controlled the game. Not flashy, not overshooting volume, just winning basketball. Your LeBron shares are safe.
Austin Reaves Went Full Role Player
This is the takeaway that matters. Austin Reaves (15/8/3, 36.1 Yahoo) is down 8.8 points from his season average, and the numbers don't lie. 4-15 from the field is a bad shooting night, period. 36 minutes played and he was forcing it. For a guy averaging 23.8 PPG, this is a rough outing.
Before you panic sell, though, one bad game doesn't reset his value. But if someone in your league wants to buy low after this performance, don't bite. Reaves has been reliable and there's no indication he's lost it. This looks like defensive intensity from New Orleans more than a Reaves regression.
Zion Actually Did Zion Things
Zion Williamson (24/4/0, 29.8 Yahoo) finally showed up with some actual scoring punch. 10-18 from the field is the kind of efficiency you want to see from him. He's been battling that assist-to-usage ratio all season, and yeah, zero dimes is rough for fantasy, but when he's just punishing people on the inside like this, it works.
Real talk though: Zion's fantasy ceiling stays limited because he doesn't generate volume in other areas. He's a points league guy or a dynasty hold if you're banking on continued health. For this season, manage expectations.
Marcus Smart Actually Played Defense
Okay, Marcus Smart (10/3/7, 45.1 Yahoo) was wild last night. 7 assists, 4 steals, 3 blocks on only 29 minutes. That's elite per-minute production. The assists especially jumped out at me, +4.1 vs his season average of 2.9 per game. He was running the offense in bursts and it translated.
This is a bump up game though. Don't go adding Smart thinking he's suddenly a 6+ assist guy. But if you needed a defensive specialist night, he delivered.
Deandre Ayton Finally Got Healthy Minutes
Deandre Ayton (13/8/1, 28.1 Yahoo) is sneaking back into relevance after being a ghost for stretches. 6-8 shooting, 25 minutes, and he's plus-0.2 vs his average. That's basically "exactly as expected," which for a backup center in the modern game is solid. He hit ownership at 69.7% already, so people noticed.
From a PT/recovery perspective (yeah, this is where I get useful), Ayton's minutes are creeping up the right way. Not explosive, not risking re-aggravation, just steady. If he keeps getting 20-25 min with that efficiency, he's a viable C2 in standard leagues. Watch the next two weeks for whether this sticks.
Herbert Jones Got Exposed
Herbert Jones (2/6/5, 27.7 Yahoo) is having a rough go of it. 1-7 from the field while putting up 33 minutes? That's a net negative game where only his defensive stats and assists kept him from completely sinking your lineup. He's -6.7 from his season average in points and this is becoming a pattern with him.
Cut him in 10-team leagues if you haven't already. 12-team and deeper, he's still roster-able as a defensive specialist, but you're not starting him unless you're desperate.
The Real Takeaway
This was a grind game, and fantasy didn't reward volume. Defensive intensity flattened scoring, which means role guys and specialists got their chances while your usual workhorses underperformed. That's the whole story.
Stream a defensive unit next time these two play. And if you've got Austin Reaves or Herbert Jones, hold tight on Reaves and consider moving on from Jones.
