Cavs Survive Tight One, But Donovan Mitchell's Absence Changed Everything

Final: Cavaliers 113, Pistons 109

Look, this wasn't a statement game. This was a "we'll take the W and move on" game, and sometimes that's all you need. Cleveland won by four against Detroit in what felt like a track meet masquerading as basketball, but here's what matters for your roster: half the Cavs' star power didn't even show up.

Donovan Mitchell was nowhere to be found, which means the bench had to carry more load than usual. That's the entire story of why this box score looks so weird. The reigning All-NBA selection averaged 28.5 points a night this season, and he took tonight off. Someone's gotta pick up the slack, and the guys who did are worth your attention.

Player ESPN FP Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg +/- Pts
Ausar Thompson 53.0 46.2 16/6/6 10.4/6.0/3.0 +5.6
Jalen Duren 39.0 42.3 24/14/1 18.6/10.8/1.7 +5.4
Cade Cunningham 34.0 39.2 10/6/14 25.2/5.8/9.9 -15.2
Jaylon Tyson 43.0 36.6 22/3/4 13.6/5.3/2.2 +8.4
Evan Mobley 40.0 36.0 18/5/4 17.6/8.7/3.8 +0.4
James Harden 22.0 29.5 18/5/7 24.3/4.9/8.1 -6.3
Dennis Schröder 30.0 26.5 15/5/5 12.3/2.9/5.2 +2.7
Tobias Harris 24.0 25.0 19/5/0 13.3/5.2/2.3 +5.7
Duncan Robinson 28.0 24.9 8/2/3 12.0/2.7/1.9 -4.0
Keon Ellis 26.0 23.8 7/4/2 5.7/1.6/0.9 +1.3

The Winners

Ausar Thompson went absolutely nuclear for the Pistons. 16 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals in 31 minutes. That's the third-best fantasy output of the night at 46.2 Yahoo points. He was +5.6 from his season average and did it on efficient shooting (7-11 FG). This is the kind of performance that makes you believe he's turning into something real. If you've got him sitting on your bench, get him in the lineup immediately. The Pistons have been running more through him lately, and nights like this prove why.

Jalen Duren punished the Cavs paint. 24 points, 14 rebounds in just 26 minutes. That's 10-14 from the line, which matters because he's been a volume FT guy. 42.3 Yahoo points is nothing to sleep on, and he was +5.4 from his season average. Here's the thing though, and I'll be real with you: this is exactly his ceiling. He's a young guy who can go off on the right matchup, but counting on 26-minute performances with this production is dangerous. He's more valuable in deeper leagues where rebounding matters more.

Jaylon Tyson had the strangest line of the night for Cleveland: 22 points on just 8-15 shooting with 5 threes. +8.4 from his season average. He's a role player who suddenly looked like a scorer, and that's exactly what happens when your All-NBA guy takes the night off. Don't get fooled by one hot game. When Mitchell comes back, Tyson's role shrinks. He's a speculative add in deeper leagues only.

The Let-Downs

Cade Cunningham was the biggest disappointment on the floor. Dropped 14 assists which is great, but 10 points on 4-16 shooting? That's not it. He was -15.2 from his season average in scoring. The All-NBA selection is supposed to carry the load more than that. He had 38 minutes to work with and couldn't get it going offensively. Cade's ceiling is sky-high, but nights like this remind you why he can be inconsistent.

James Harden shot 5-17 and that tells you everything. 18 points, 7 assists, but the efficiency was ugly. -6.3 from his season average. When Harden's not hitting his shot, he's not the weapon you paid for in the draft. The beard's still producing fantasy points through assists and FT volume, but you want to see better shot selection.

The Real Story

Mitchell being out is the headline here. I'm not sure if it's load management, injury, or just a random rest night, but when your best scorer doesn't suit up, it creates chaos. The Cavs still won because they're deep and Dennis Schröder stepped up with 15 points and 5 assists in 28 minutes. That's your third-string point guard playing meaningful minutes. Evan Mobley, your Defensive Player of the Year, had to do more too, and honestly, his 18 points and 5 boards felt solid but not special.

For the Pistons, this is the kind of loss that stings because they had their chances. Tobias Harris stepped up with 19 points on good efficiency, but it wasn't enough.

What This Means Monday

If Mitchell was rested, don't worry. The guy's a machine. If there's an injury? That's a different story, but we'd have heard by now. The Cavs rotation stays normal once he's back.

The one add worth noting league-wide is Jarrett Allen got a bump to 92.1% ownership, probably on name recognition, but he only played 20 minutes and put up 8/3. He's not a league winner. If you've got bench depth, don't chase this one.

Bottom line: Cavs get the win in a closer-than-it-should-be game. Pistons stay competitive. Fantasy-wise, watch Thompson and Duren, but don't overreact to one night. Same blueprint applies Monday as did last week.
