Maxey Goes Nuclear, 76ers Demolish Wolves, But Fantasy Managers Need to Pump the Brakes

Tyrese Maxey didn't just have a good night. He had a "why is this man not in your starting lineup" night. 39 points, 8 assists, 16-28 from the field, and he did it in 35 minutes. That's 58.6 Yahoo FP, sitting him comfortably at the top of the leaderboard and +10.1 above his season average. For context, his season average is already elite at 28.9 PPG. Tonight was him playing at another level entirely.

But here's the thing about blowouts, and I say this as someone who watched my Rockets get blown out plenty this season: fantasy points in a 27-point game can be misleading. The 76ers were rolling so hard that Tyrese Maxey checked out early. This isn't sustainable volume. You're buying the performance, not the pattern.

Player ESPN FP Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg +/- Pts
Tyrese Maxey 66.0 58.6 39/3/8 28.9/4.1/6.7 +10.1
Anthony Edwards 49.0 48.3 28/9/3 29.5/5.2/3.7 -1.5
VJ Edgecombe 43.0 38.9 24/7/1 15.0/5.5/4.0 +9.0

The Real Story? VJ Edgecombe Is Actually Cooking

VJ Edgecombe dropped 24 points on 8-18 shooting with 6 threes and went for 38.9 Yahoo FP. That's +9.0 above his season average. The difference between him and Maxey? Edgecombe was out there getting real minutes, not being rested in the fourth quarter of a blowout.

At 15.0 PPG season average, Edgecombe's having a legitimately breakout stretch. If the 76ers keep him in the rotation at high volume like this, he's a waiver wire guy you should be targeting in 12-team and deeper leagues. He's only played 36 minutes total, which means the usage is there, the shots are falling, and the role looks real.

Anthony Edwards Met Expectations (Barely)

Anthony Edwards put up 28/9/3 in 34 minutes and hit on 11-19 FG with 3 threes. That's solid, that's what you want from an All-NBA Second Teamer. But he was -1.5 vs his season average of 29.5 PPG. In a game his team won by 27 points, he didn't get to go off. He was efficient, sure, but Ant didn't need to carry the load tonight.

The real takeaway: don't overreact to one off night in a blowout. Edwards is still Edwards. Move on.

The Timberwolves Role Guys Actually Tried

For Minnesota, it was a massacre. But Jaden McDaniels was one of the few who had something to show for it. 19 points, 6 boards, 3 blocks in 34 minutes? +4.2 above season average. McDaniels went 5-12 from the field but was 9-9 from the line, and that's the kind of efficiency that matters in a game where your team is getting run off the court.

Quentin Grimes for the 76ers had 19 points, 7 assists, and 5 threes in just 27 minutes. That's +6.3 above season average on limited minutes. If he keeps this role, he's a solid depth guy for your bench in 10-team leagues.

The Bottom Line

Maxey had the best night, but it came in a game where his team was up by 30 at halftime. Edgecombe's the one worth watching going forward. Edwards is fine. And the Wolves? They got cooked. Roll with what you have, don't panic trade anyone away, and keep your eye on Edgecombe for deep league pickups.
