The Bench That Broke a Favourite
Look at Washington's top performers. Tristan Vukcevic, Anthony Gill, and Sharife Cooper combined for 93.9 Yahoo points on bench minutes. That's not normal. That's not sustainable. But it happened.
Anthony Gill is the real story here. He's a 2.7 PPG plodder on the season, and tonight he dropped 13/8/3 in 30 minutes. That's plus-10.3 on scoring alone. He went 6-for-9 from the floor and didn't even try a three pointer. Just efficient, basic basketball. The thing is, Gill only gets this kind of run when the Wizards go deep into their bench, which means someone ahead of him is either injured, resting, or the team's blown out. None of those scenarios are happening in a close win. So: don't go add him thinking this is the new normal.
Tristan Vukcevic is different though. 12/5/1 with 5 steals in just 17 minutes. The steals juice the Yahoo scoring (3 points each), but he was also clean with the ball and solid on rebounding for a 2.5 rebound season average. If he's getting meaningful minutes, he's worth owning in deeper leagues. The ESPN score (46) actually tells you more than the Yahoo score (37.5) because the volume shooting efficiency is real, but the steals are fluky. Watch his next game. If he gets 17+ minutes again, he's probably safe at pick-ups.
Sharife Cooper put up 8/5/7/2 in 24 minutes. That's a line that makes sense. He's a pass-first guard, and he delivered. Plus-2.0 on points isn't massive, but the 7 assists bump him into real value territory. He's someone you'd want to watch for increased minutes going forward if the Wizards keep this bench rotation tight.
Jarace Walker Carried Indiana, But It Wasn't Enough
Jarace Walker was legitimately outstanding. 19/14/7/2 on a weird shooting line (5-15 FG but 8-10 FT) gives him 47.3 Yahoo points. That's plus-8.3 on the scoring line alone, and the rebounding put him over the top. Problem is, look who didn't play for Indiana: Andrew Nembhard barely touched the floor (5/1/4 in 21 minutes), and the stars who should've carried the load just... didn't. When a role player has to drop 47 Yahoo points for his team to lose by 7, something went wrong with the entire squad.
Walker is borderline undroppable at this point, but tonight showed you what happens when he has to do too much. He took 15 shots. He shot 33% from the floor. That's not a recipe for repeated 47-point games. This was a ceiling night, not the floor. Expect more 25-30 Yahoo point nights going forward.
The Pacers' No-Show
Jay Huff went for 15/8/1 with 3 blocks in 20 minutes, which is solid, but again, it's a backup centre stepping up. Ben Sheppard had 15/3/2 with 3 threes in 26 minutes, and yeah, that's real production. Plus-8.4 on scoring is legitimate. But nobody else showed up. The All-NBA selection Tyrese Haliburton didn't play. Pascal Siakam didn't play. The Pacers came in crippled and still lost. That's a statement on the Wizards' depth, but it's also a massive fantasy L for Pacer rostered players.
Real Talk
Here's what you do Monday morning:
If you're in a league where Ben Sheppard is available, grab him. He's putting up real numbers and getting consistent run. He's no longer a deep bench player, he's a 26-minute anchor who hit 3 threes tonight.
If you've got Anthony Gill, enjoy the 29 points but don't get attached. He's a salary cap casualty and a spot-up shooter. Tonight he got fed. That happens once a month.
Sharife Cooper is worth a waiver add if you need assist production and your league is 12+ teams. He's not getting 24 minutes every night, but when he plays, he distributes.
Don't panic on anyone who didn't play because of rest. The Wizards had their full squad available and just executed. The Pacers were clearly short-handed and still competed. That's actually fine for their fantasy outlook long-term.
This was a weird game. Enjoy the value plays while they lasted, but don't build a roster around bench players going off. Sustainable scoring wins championships, not one-night stands from backup centres.
