Thunder Got Absolutely Cooked, Shai's Absence Cost Them Everything
Bucks 110, Thunder 93. And honestly, if you had OKC in your lineup today, I'm sorry mate. This was a nightmare scenario that nobody saw coming, but the injury gods weren't having it.
Look, I'm not gonna sugarcoat this. The Thunder rolled up to Milwaukee without their reigning MVP, and it showed. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander being out completely changes the math on this game, and Thunder fans (including yours truly, sitting here at 2am Melbourne time watching this disaster unfold) were basically playing with half a deck.
But let's look at who actually showed up:
| Player | ESPN FP | Yahoo FP | Tonight | Season Avg | +/- Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ousmane Dieng | 65.0 | 56.2 | 19/11/6 | 4.6/1.9/1.1 | +14.4 |
| Bobby Portis | 51.0 | 44.9 | 15/12/3 | 13.2/6.6/1.6 | +1.8 |
| Chet Holmgren | 43.0 | 43.6 | 16/13/4 | 17.4/8.7/1.6 | -1.4 |
| Kevin Porter Jr. | 32.0 | 32.1 | 12/3/7 | 17.3/5.2/7.6 | -5.3 |
| AJ Green | 32.0 | 26.9 | 17/2/3 | 10.7/2.6/2.0 | +6.3 |
| Isaiah Joe | 28.0 | 24.8 | 17/4/2 | 10.5/2.5/1.4 | +6.5 |
| Pete Nance | 29.0 | 24.4 | 11/7/2 | 5.0/2.0/0.6 | +6.0 |
| Kyle Kuzma | 19.0 | 21.8 | 14/4/2 | 12.9/5.0/2.5 | +1.1 |
| Kenrich Williams | 14.0 | 18.1 | 9/8/1 | 7.0/3.5/1.6 | +2.0 |
| Jared McCain | 14.0 | 17.6 | 13/3/2 | 6.9/2.1/1.6 | +6.1 |
The Bucks Show
Ousmane Dieng absolutely went off for 56.2 Yahoo FP. Like, this dude is averaging 4.6 points a game and dropped 19/11/6 with 4 blocks? That's a +14.4 performance that came out of nowhere. He was getting heavy minutes (36) and made it count. This feels like a one-time explosion more than a breakout, but in a 12-team league, you've gotta at least check if he's still available. Probably not sustainable at this volume, but that's the kind of game you remember.
Bobby Portis had himself a solid night too, 44.9 Yahoo FP on 15/12/3. More reliable than Dieng's outburst, honestly. Portis is a guy you can trust to contribute, and he picked up rebounds when it mattered.
The Bucks' role guys showed up when it counted. AJ Green got to 26.9 Yahoo FP with 17 points and 5 threes in 38 minutes. That's the kind of volume you want to see from a backup guard. Pete Nance came off the bench for 24.4 FP (11/7/2 with 3 threes), clearly got extra opportunities with the depth they were using.
Thunder Fought Back, But It Wasn't Enough
Chet Holmgren was the only Thunder player who actually looked like he belonged on the court, putting up 43.6 Yahoo FP with 16/13/4 and perfect free throw shooting (6-6). He was in foul trouble a bit (only 27 minutes), which hurt OKC's defensive presence. Still, when your franchise centerpiece is out, you need your All-Defensive big to carry, and Chet tried.
Isaiah Joe was the bright spot at 24.8 Yahoo FP. Dude went 5-11 from three and finished with 17/4/2. That's +6.5 from his season average, which is exactly what you need from a guard when your MVP is sitting. Joe actually played with some aggression in this one.
Jared McCain added 17.6 Yahoo FP off the bench with 13 points and 5-6 free throws. That's a +6.1 performance. These Thunder bench guys were fighting, but it still wasn't close enough.
Here's the brutal part: Cason Wallace went 1-7 from the field and finished with only 15.9 Yahoo FP. When your point guard is struggling and your MVP is out, the whole offense basically breaks down.
The Reality Check
Without Shai, without Isaiah Hartenstein, without Jalen Williams (if he was out too), this Thunder team is just not competitive against a team like Milwaukee. The bench scoring was there. Holmgren fought. Isaiah Joe showed up. But you can't win games when your top three guys don't play.
If you had Thunder players in your lineups, this one stings. If you grabbed any of those Bucks role guys on waiver adds, you might want to be careful about thinking this is their new normal. Dieng dropping 56 FP is a lottery ticket moment, not a repeatable thing.
For next game, keep an eye on Shai's status. If he's back, Thunder are right back in contention. If not, you're probably benching most of their guys. Simple as that.
