Joel Embiid Goes Absolutely Mad, 76ers Survive Saddiq Bey's Career Night

Right, let me be direct about what happened here. Joel Embiid put on a masterclass and the 76ers barely held on against a Pelicans side that had absolutely no business staying in this game. This was the kind of performance that reminds you why Shai's MVP season last year was so tight, because when Embiid gets going like this, he's genuinely unguardable.

The Joel Embiid Show

63.2 Yahoo points on 40 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists. That's a +13.8 point output compared to his season average, and honestly, it could've been worse for the Pelicans if he stayed on the floor longer. Embiid was 13-27 from the field (which is totally fine when you're hitting 11 of 14 free throws), and he looked like he was operating on a different plane from everyone else on the court. 39 minutes of dominant basketball.

Here's the thing that should concern you if you're holding Embiid in a keeper league: this is sustainable when his free throw volume is this high. 11 FTA in a single game? That doesn't happen every night, but when you've got the Pelicans defence scrambling and fouling constantly, Embiid makes them pay. That's the MVP-calibre player you drafted. You're not going to get 63 every night, but performances like this aren't anomalies for him either.

The Saddiq Bey Explosion

Now, Saddiq Bey put up 44.7 Yahoo points with 34 points and 6 rebounds in just 31 minutes. That's +17.5 points versus his season average. Before you get carried away adding him to your watch list, let's be honest, this was an outlier. He went 12-19 from the field and 6-6 from free throw line, which is absolutely elite efficiency. But those shooting numbers don't happen consistently, and he's not getting 31 minutes a night in the regular rotation.

That said, if he's available in your league, he's worth monitoring. The 76ers clearly trust him, and he can go nuclear from three-point range. The Pelicans couldn't stay in front of him all night.

Tyrese Maxey Underperforms, But Stay Calm

Tyrese Maxey shot poorly tonight, finishing with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists for 38 Yahoo FP. That's -11.2 points versus his 29.2 scoring average. He went 7-18 from the field, which wasn't great, but he did drop 8 dimes and only took one shot at the free throw line. The 4 three-pointers made showed he was trying to get going, but the Pelicans' defence tightened up on him when Embiid wasn't occupying space.

Don't panic here. One off night doesn't change what Maxey is. He's going to have games where the scoring doesn't fall and the assists carry him. This is actually the kind of performance that shows his floor as a player, and 38 Yahoo points is still respectable.

Kelly Oubre Jr. Finds His Groove

Kelly Oubre Jr. came off the bench and put up 37 Yahoo FP with 19 points and 10 rebounds. That's +5.3 rebounds versus his average, and it looks like he's getting more opportunities in this 76ers rotation. The three-pointers are falling (3 of 6 from deep), and he's being trusted with real minutes. If you're in a deep league and need forward help, Oubre is worth tracking. He's not going to give you 40 points every night, but this level of production (19 points, 10 boards, four threes) is exactly what you want from a bench forward.

The Pelicans' Bright Spots (And Zion's Rough Night)

Trey Murphy III chipped in 35.8 Yahoo FP with 19 points and 9 rebounds, but he shot just 8-21 from the field. That's inefficient, though the rebounds helped prop up the fantasy score. VJ Edgecombe went 6-10 and added 28.1 Yahoo FP with solid efficiency, so at least the Pelicans had some contributors beyond Bey.

Zion Williamson though? He absolutely cooked tonight, finishing with just 24 Yahoo FP on 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists. That's -10.7 points versus his season average. He only took 6 shots and didn't get aggressive, which is the opposite of what you need from a guy of his calibre. Whether that's a load management thing or the 76ers' defence suffocating him, it's worth watching. If this becomes a pattern, his fantasy value dips significantly.

Yves Missi was solid with 33.1 Yahoo FP on 7 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, plus 4 blocks. That's decent production for a young centre, and the blocks pop on the sheet. He's getting solid minutes off the bench for New Orleans.

The Wire Moves

Jose Alvarado got 17 minutes and put up 19.9 Yahoo FP with 10 points and 3 assists. He's trending up in ownership (+0.1%) but is still only 1.8% owned in ESPN leagues. If your league is desperate for bench guards, he's worth a speculative add, but don't mortgage anything for him.

Dominick Barlow got 28 minutes and added 17.6 Yahoo FP for Philly with 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals. He's up 0.4% in ownership, which makes sense given the minutes. In super deep leagues he's a stash, but he's not moving the needle in 12-team formats.

The Actual Story

The 76ers won this because Embiid is a cheat code and the Pelicans couldn't manufacture enough depth scoring to stay close. Bey went off, but one player going nuclear doesn't win you games when your best player (Zion) has an off night. This was a statement performance from Philly's superstar, and honestly, it's the kind of game that makes you feel better about having him on your roster, even when he has quieter nights.

For dynasty owners, Embiid's still the guy. For season-long? You already knew that. Enjoy the 63-point night and don't expect it every time out.
