Sengun & KD Take Over: Rockets Bounce Back with Dominant Win Over Memphis

Houston Rockets 108, Memphis Grizzlies 99

This wasn't pretty, but it was exactly what the Rockets needed. Alperen Sengun and Kevin Durant went absolutely nuclear in the second half to put away a Grizzlies team that had no answer for Houston's two-man game. Final score doesn't tell the story here, but fantasy-wise? Top-seeded lineup night for the Rockets core.

Sengun Was Unreal Tonight (50.8 Yahoo FP)

Look, I'm a Rockets fan so take that how you want, but Sengun put on a masterclass. 33 points on 15-17 shooting is ridiculous efficiency, and he was basically unstoppable in the post when Memphis tried to go small. The real flex? 9 rebounds and 6 assists on just 33 minutes. Dude was so dominant they didn't even need to keep him out there late.

He's been hovering around 21.5 PPG all season, so +11.5 points tonight was legit the statement performance he needed. The question for fantasy managers is whether this is his new floor going forward or a one-off explosion. Here's what I think, the Grizzlies have absolutely no one who can body him down low, and Houston was hunting him every single time. Against stronger defensive bigs, expect regression toward that season average.

Still, if you own Sengun and he's been frustrating you with inconsistent scoring, tonight proves he can go nuclear on any given night. Keep him locked in.

KD Did KD Things (46.6 Yahoo FP)

Kevin Durant finished with 33 points on 37 minutes and still looked kinda bored. Like, 11-24 shooting doesn't sound efficient, but when you're hitting 4 threes and 7 of 9 free throws, the percentages don't tell the full story. He was up +6.6 vs his season average, which is solid but not crazy for him. This is peak Durant: you never know if he's getting 25 on 50% or 33 on 45%, but either way, you're probably winning the night.

Real talk though, KD looked engaged for the entire 37 minutes. Memphis had no perimeter defense to throw at him, so he was basically picking his spots in isolation. That's the type of game that does build confidence heading into tougher matchups.

Amen Thompson's Weird Night (37.6 Yahoo FP)

Here's what got me: Amen Thompson put up 14 assists and 8 rebounds in 41 minutes but only scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting. That's -10.2 vs his season average, which stings if you own him. But also, 14 dimes is nutty. That's an All-Star caliber assist night that got totally masked by the scoring drought.

The Grizzlies were leaving him open at every turn because they were all collapsing on Sengun and KD in the post. Thompson was running the offense beautifully, just wasn't aggressive shooting-wise. I'm not panicking here, this is more of a "wrong game for his skill set" night than a concerning trend. Against better defensive teams, he'll get his scoring chances.

Cam Spencer Keeps It Weird (33.5 Yahoo FP)

Cam Spencer with 13 assists on 5 points is the most Memphis thing ever. He was facilitating everything for the Grizzlies, but the shot-making around him was bad enough that he never got his own looks going. Still ended up with 33.5 Yahoo FP despite the rough scoring line, which shows how much value the assists bring even when nothing else clicks.

This was more about Memphis's offensive struggles than anything Spencer did wrong. He stays relevant on your bench if you grabbed him.

Waiver Heat Check

Tari Eason is trending in the right direction. He went +5.0 vs season average with 17 points and 4 threes in 26 minutes. Volume is still low, but when he gets on the court, he's been efficient lately. Worth monitoring if you've got an open spot.

On the other side, Jabari Smith Jr. was ice cold. 8 points on 2-6 shooting against a Grizzlies team with zero perimeter defense is a bad look. He was -7.1 vs season average, and you can't overlook that against a bottom-five defensive unit. Might be worth shopping him if you can get value.

The Real Talk

Houston just flexed on a team missing its star guy, and that's the whole story. Sengun and KD were locked in, Amen ran the offense, and it was a comfortable 9-point win. For fantasy purposes, Sengun just cracked 50 Yahoo FP, KD delivered his usual, and the supporting cast did enough. That's a winning night on the stat sheet.

If you're riding Sengun and KD, tonight was a good reminder of why you drafted them high. If you're holding Thompson hoping for more scoring volume, keep that faith but manage expectations against elite defensive teams. And if Jabari is on your bench, that's probably fine for now, but monitor the next couple games to see if this shooting slump sticks around.
