Embiid Goes Full Cyborg Mode, But Maxey's Disappearing Act Should Scare Philly Fans
Joel Embiid just reminded everyone why he's still a top-5 fantasy asset even when the rest of his team is playing like they forgot how to shoot. Dropped 38/11/5 on 13-21 shooting for 57.7 Yahoo points, running +12.9 above his season average. That's not a good game. That's a statement. But here's the problem: he was basically playing 1-on-5 out there because Tyrese Maxey completely vanished when it mattered most.
The Knicks stole a 112-109 win in Philly, and while Embiid's individual dominance was impossible to ignore, this loss exposed something ugly about the 76ers' depth chart. When your co-star All-NBA guard underperforms by nearly 8 points and your team still nearly pulls it off, that tells you everything about how much Embiid is carrying.
Tonight's Top Performers
| Player | Yahoo FP | Tonight | Season Avg | vs Avg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Joel Embiid | 57.7 | 38/11/5 | 25.1/7.4/3.6 | +12.9 pts |
| Jalen Brunson | 44.0 | 31/5/6 | 28.0/3.2/6.1 | +3.0 pts |
| OG Anunoby | 41.4 | 23/7/4 | 15.7/5.5/2.3 | +7.3 pts |
| Tyrese Maxey | 40.6 | 22/3/6 | 29.9/4.3/6.8 | -7.9 pts |
| Josh Hart | 38.1 | 10/13/7 | 11.9/7.8/5.2 | +5.2 rebs |
Embiid was basically unstoppable, going 9-12 from the free throw line and knocking down 3 threes. He's been dominant all season (25.1 PPG) but this was a gear up performance. The concern? He shouldn't have to go full anime protagonist mode just to keep the game competitive. That's not sustainable, and it's not how contenders win in the playoffs.
The Winners
Joel Embiid crushed his season average by nearly 13 points. 57.7 Yahoo FP is what we drafted him for, and he delivered with efficiency to match. He's still the engine, but when he's your offense's entire personality, that's a red flag for the team and bad news for playoff seeding.
OG Anunoby (41.4 FP, +7.3 vs avg) was the Knicks' second-best player tonight and already owns 86.2% ownership, so you probably have him. But if you don't, stop sleeping. He's gotten a usage bump lately and these are the games that remind you he's one of the toughest two-way wings in the league. Shot 10-15 from the field and played 36 minutes. That's a guy who's earned his minutes.
Josh Hart (38.1 FP) came with the hustle, pulling down 13 boards despite only scoring 10. That's Hart in a nutshell, and it's exactly why he has value. Rebounder first, everything else second. Perfect 4th-5th round player.
The Letdowns
Tyrese Maxey dropped 22/3/6 for 40.6 FP but was -7.9 below his season average. He's supposed to be your All-NBA guard dropping 29.9 PPG, and instead he looked pedestrian for stretches. He took 24 shots and only made 8. That's not a bad game, that's just... fine. For an All-NBA player, fine is a letdown. Don't panic yet because one bad shooting night happens, but if this becomes a trend in close games, Philly's got problems.
Paul George (24.2 FP, -6.4 vs avg) was basically a ghost. 3-10 from the field, 9 points in 32 minutes. He's been inconsistent all season (15.4 PPG), and nights like this remind you why he dropped so far in drafts. Limited upside, ceiling games are rare. Not a drop, but keep managing expectations.
The Trends
The real story is the Knicks' depth killed Philly. Landry Shamet (18.8 FP off the bench), Miles McBride (19.2 FP), and Mitchell Robinson's 30 fantasy points are exactly what playoff rosters need. Philly's bench had Dominick Barlow (7.9 FP) and basically nobody else, which is wild for a contender.
Karl-Anthony Towns only played 16 minutes for the Knicks and dropped just 19.7 FP. That's interesting. If his minutes are getting managed or if Brunson/Hart/OG are eating into his role, that's worth watching. Towns should be getting 25+ minutes in a tight game.
The Moves
Add Dominick Barlow (1.9% owned, +0.2% adds). I know, I know. Dude only played 16 minutes and scored 4 points. But he's now in the ESPN trending adds and got 16 minutes on a contending team. With Embiid needing backup five minutes, Barlow could carve out a role. Speculative grab in deep leagues only.
Drop Paul George in 10-team leagues if you've got a better waiver target. He's been a consistent disappointment, and nights like this make you realize you drafted based on name brand, not actual output. 9 points in a close game from your third star is unacceptable. Consider trading him if you can land someone more consistent.
Trade Tyrese Maxey if you can get All-NBA or First Team production. He's been inconsistent enough that his season average (29.9) doesn't match his production in crunch moments. Ride Embiid and flip Maxey to someone buying the name.
Next Up
Philly needs to figure out if they're a real contender or just treading water. Embiid can't carry every single game. Watch if Maxey bounces back or if this inconsistency continues.
The Knicks proved they can win on the road against East contenders. Brunson's game-winner mentality is real. Both teams play again soon, and fantasy-wise, you want to see if tonight's performances were real or one-offs.
