KD Put The Team On His Back, But Cade's Quiet Night Has Detroit Worried
Houston rolled into Detroit and took care of business, 111-104, and honestly, this game tells you everything you need to know about playoff vibes in January. The Rockets got their dub because Kevin Durant decided he was tired of mid performances, while the Pistons' PG just completely disappeared when they needed him most. If you own Cade, we need to talk.

Tonight's Top Performers
Kevin Durant went absolutely nuclear. 50.9 Yahoo points on 32 buckets, and the man was efficient doing it, 11-19 from the field with five threes. He was +5.7 points above his season average, and this wasn't some empty stats night either. Durant was on the floor for 40 minutes and was basically unstoppable in the fourth quarter when Houston needed buckets. This is the version of KD that reminds you why he's still an elite scorer. If you were thinking about selling low on him, don't. This is who he is.
Amen Thompson was the glue guy Houston needed. 44.3 points on 15/9/7, and the assist total was especially clean. He was only -3.4 on scoring (came in a tick under average), but the rebound and assist bump put him squarely in your fantasy lineup sweet spot. Twenty-three minutes of active floor time for Ausar Thompson suggests Houston's rotating in the young guys more, which is something to monitor.
Jabari Smith Jr. with 37.5 Yahoo points was the third option Houston needed. Pulled down 10 rebounds, which is +3.1 above his season norm, and hit a three. On 5-9 shooting with limited minutes (37), this is the efficiency you want to see from him. The dude's starting to look more comfortable in this system.
The Winners
Kevin Durant is the obvious one here. 50.9 Yahoo points when he's averaging around 45? That's a floor game plus elite shooting efficiency. Five threes on a night when Houston's guard depth was getting minutes is huge. Durant's reminding people why you don't fade him.
Amen Thompson put up 44.3 Yahoo points in 39 minutes. The scoring was slightly down, but he made up for it by cleaning the glass and running the offense. This is the all-around game you need from a young PG if you're rolling with him in fantasy.
The Letdowns
Cade Cunningham is the real problem here. 28.2 Yahoo points on 12 points and 8 assists when he's averaging 25.3/9.7 is a -13.3 point swing. Five-of-13 shooting is rough, and for a guy who's supposed to be a primary ballhandler, going quiet in a close game is concerning. This wasn't a blowout where the Pistons went away from him. He just didn't have it. Don't panic yet because one bad game doesn't kill a player, but if you're in a trade deadline window, this is a reminder to stay alert on his usage.
Tobias Harris was basically invisible, dropping only 11.7 Yahoo points on 1-6 shooting. That's -9.3 versus his season average. In a close game, the Pistons needed more from their veteran wings. Harris looking washed should worry Detroit's front office more than fantasy owners, but it does show the offensive burden was entirely on Cade and the young guys.
The Trends
The biggest thing I'm clocking is Steven Adams hitting DNP status for Houston. He's been a staple for the Rockets, but seeing him get zero minutes is a red flag. Adams was -0.1% in ownership and that number's probably going down. Clint Capela played 16 minutes and looked sharp (28.3 Yahoo points on limited volume), so the center rotation might be shifting. Keep an eye on whether this is a one-game thing or if Adams' fantasy value just took a hit.
Jabari Smith Jr.'s minutes staying in that 37-minute range tells me Houston's not overloading him even in competitive games. That's a ceiling conversation for his fantasy value.
The Moves
Add: Clint Capela - The man dropped 28.3 Yahoo points on 16 minutes. If he's eating into Adams' work, he's a sneaky add for the next few weeks. Low ownership, high upside if he keeps getting these minutes.
Drop: Steven Adams - Zero minutes against a divisional opponent. Until he shows up in the box score again, he's dead weight on most rosters.
Trade Target: Amen Thompson - If your league is still sleeping on him, try to acquire him. The assist/rebound profile plus steals eligibility makes him a perfect secondary ball handler. Forty-four points tonight is sustainable if Houston keeps trusting him.
Next Up
Watch the Rockets' next outing to see if Durant stays this hot or if that was a one-game explosion. Also monitor if Adams gets minutes back. For Detroit, Cade needs to bounce back quick because being -13 versus average in a close loss is exactly the kind of narrative that tanks trade value. The Pistons play three games this week, so there's opportunity for him to get right.
