Payton Pritchard Just Became Your Sixth Man Problem

Look, I'm a Celtics guy and I know that pains me to say this, but Payton Pritchard just put up numbers last night that should have every fantasy manager in a cold sweat. The dude dropped 32 points on 13-24 shooting with six threes, and yeah, sure, it was against Brooklyn, but that's a +15.5 point swing above his season average of 16.5. This wasn't a fluke box score either. This was efficient, this was volume, and this was a guy who's been basically a afterthought all season suddenly looking like he remembered how to play.

The Celtics won 130-126, but the real story isn't the W. It's that Pritchard is getting 40 minutes now, and when a dude who averages 16.5 PPG suddenly starts taking 24 shots, something's changed in the rotation. This is a waiver wire fire that's about to go nuclear if people aren't paying attention.

Tonight's Top Performers

Michael Porter Jr. 46.6 30/8/4 25.3/7.4/3.2 +4.7/+0.6/+0.8

Sam Hauser 31.3 19/4/3 8.9/3.7/1.4 +10.1/+0.3/+1.6

The Winners

Jaylen Brown walked away with 56.8 Yahoo points on a 27/9/12 stat line, and yeah, the scoring was down a bit (-2.8 vs average) but the assists were absolutely there. Twelve assists is Jaylen doing work, and even though the FG% wasn't great at 9-27, he was efficient from three and got to the line. This is the kind of all-around night that keeps Brown locked in as a fantasy staple. He's the reason Boston won, and frankly he did it without Jayson Tatum in the lineup.

Michael Porter Jr. put up 46.6 Yahoo points with 30 points and shot like he was in 2K. Nine of 19 from the field, four threes, and eight of nine from the stripe? That's not noise. MPJ was +4.7 on his scoring average and this is exactly the kind of elite wing scoring that makes him a league winner when he's healthy. Brooklyn's defense was cooked.

Payton Pritchard is the sleeper story. 43 Yahoo points, 32 points on 13-24 shooting. Yes, Brooklyn's perimeter defense is trash, but Pritchard hasn't looked like this since his rookie year. Sixth Man of the Year last season for a reason, but he's been buried. Forty minutes played. That's a massive red flag that rotations are shifting.

The Letdowns

Anfernee Simons dropped just 19.6 Yahoo points on 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists across 36 minutes. That's -3.9 on his scoring average and it's the kind of game where a guy gets heavy minutes but doesn't deliver. For a dude averaging 13.9 PPG, this was a stinker. The shots weren't falling (4-16) and he looked disengaged. Not panic time, but flag it.

The Trends

Here's what matters: Derrick White didn't play for Boston. That's huge. His absence and Pritchard getting 40 minutes suggests the Celtics are working through something in their rotation. Pritchard's usage skyrocketed tonight and if White's dealing with injury or they're experimenting, that's a minutes shift that changes the whole equation for Boston's bench scoring.

Nic Claxton dropped 40.8 on the Nets with 18 points and 9 rebounds, +5.4 above his point average. He's still Brooklyn's best interior presence and he's averaging solid minutes. The rebounding is consistent, the scoring is creeping up.

The Moves

Add Payton Pritchard immediately. I don't care if he's already rostered in your league. If he's available for any reason, you grab him off waivers today. Forty minutes against anyone shouldn't happen for a bench guy. Something shifted. Sixth Man of the Year isn't broken, he's just been dormant.

Stream Sam Hauser moving forward. Thirty-one Yahoo points on 19 points and five threes. Hauser's been a sneaky efficient scorer off the bench, and when Boston needs shooting, he's getting run. He's at +10.1 on his scoring average tonight. Not a permanent add, but he's useful when the matchup is right.

Don't panic on Anfernee Simons. One bad night against a locked-in Celtics defense doesn't tank a guy. But monitor his minutes next game. If it dips, he's about to become a punt.

Next Up

Boston and Brooklyn play again soon, but the real move is watching whether Pritchard stays in the rotation or if this was a one-night explosion. Keep an eye on Derrick White's status. If he's actually hurt, Pritchard becomes a must-own. If White comes back, Pritchard craters back to 18 minutes and 12 points. The move matters more than the performance.
