Luka Stops the Bleeding, but Denver's Big Three Stays Broken

The Lakers just beat the Nuggets 115-107, and before you get hyped about another Denver collapse, pump the brakes. Luka went absolutely nuclear (38/13/10 on 71.6 Yahoo FP), LeBron did LeBron things, and Denver's supporting cast tried to carry a team that's still missing its All-NBA centerpiece. This wasn't Denver playing bad. This was Denver playing without their engine.

But here's what matters for your lineup: the Nuggets didn't have Nikola Jokic. That's a 29.6 point, 12.2 rebound, 11.0 assist hole you can't fill with role guys. Jamal Murray did his job (45.9 FP, +2.0 vs average), and Peyton Watson went off for 37.5 FP (+4.0 vs average), but it wasn't enough. And on the Lakers side, some real fantasy action happened that you need to know about.

Tonight's Top Performers

Player Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg vs Avg
Luka Dončić (LAL) 71.6 38/13/10 33.5/7.7/8.7 +4.5/+5.3/+1.3
LeBron James (LAL) 35.8 19/9/8 22.5/6.0/7.0 -3.5/+3.0/+1.0
Jamal Murray (DEN) 45.9 28/2/11 26.0/4.4/7.4 +2.0/-2.4/+3.6
Peyton Watson (DEN) 37.5 18/5/3 14.0/5.0/1.8 +4.0/+0.0/+1.2
Aaron Gordon (DEN) 30.3 18/4/5 18.0/6.2/2.4 +0.0/-2.2/+2.6

The Winners

Luka Dončić is doing Luka things. 71.6 FP and he was +4.5 on scoring is the definition of carrying a team. The assists were there (10), the rebounding bump showed up (+5.3), and he hit his free throws (11-12). This is exactly what you want from your first-round pick. He's not having a down night, he's just executing at elite level.

LeBron James posted 35.8 FP with 19/9/8 and actually beat his scoring average... wait, no. He was down 3.5 points (22.5 avg), but the rebounds and assists came through clean. That's fine production when your star carries the load. Don't panic if LeBron has quieter scoring nights as long as the all-around game stays intact.

Peyton Watson is the real story here. 37.5 FP on a 14.0 average is a massive +4.0 spike. He hit 4 threes, played 37 minutes, and was the Nuggets' second option all night. The ownership bump to 76.2% is justified, but here's the thing: Watson explodes when Denver's short-handed. With Jokic out, he's getting volume. The second Jokic comes back, Watson's role shrinks. Don't overpay.

The Letdowns

Deandre Ayton got 14 minutes for the Lakers and put up just 4/8 with 13.6 FP. That's -9.9 on scoring vs his 13.9 average. I get it, Jaxson Hayes was dominant (9/5/2 on 22 minutes), and the Lakers went with smaller lineups. But Ayton getting benched in the fourth quarter of a close game? That's a red flag for his role going forward. Monitor the next game before you get aggressive with him.

The Trends

This is the big one: Nikola Jokic didn't play. A 29.6/12.2/11.0 player just disappears from the box score, and that completely changes Denver's available fantasy points. Jamal Murray got 36 minutes (his season avg is probably around 32), Aaron Gordon played 31, and Peyton Watson got 37. Those minutes inflations won't stick once Jokic returns.

Marcus Smart went for 18.9 FP with 15 points on 4-9 shooting (season avg is 10 points). That's a +5.0 spike and he hit 3 threes. Lakers' bench guys will eat in blowouts, but don't get cute thinking Smart is suddenly a scoring option.

The Moves

Add Peyton Watson if he's available in your league. 76.2% ownership now makes sense. He's getting 37 minutes when Denver's core players are out, and he's efficient (+4.0 above average). He's not a league-winner, but he's a solid flex play on nights when Denver's dealing with injuries.

Drop or trade Deandre Ayton if you can move him. 14 minutes in a competitive game is ugly. The Lakers have other frontcourt options they trust more right now. Check the injury report on Jaxson Hayes before you panic, but Ayton's role looks squeezed.

Monitor Jamal Murray closely next game. He played 36 minutes and delivered (45.9 FP), but that volume only exists because Jokic was out. Once the MVP candidate returns, Murray's usage rate settles back down. He's still a PG1 option, just temper expectations.

Next Up

Watch the Nuggets injury report like a hawk. Nikola Jokic's return timeline is everything. A week without him? Watson and Murray get more run. Jokic back tomorrow? Ignore the Watson explosion. For the Lakers, keep tabs on Austin Reaves (didn't play tonight) and whether the rotation stabilizes. Ayton's minutes are the canary in the coal mine for LA's frontcourt depth.
