Ja Morant Was Unhinged, But Jock Landale Might Be Your New Secret Weapon

Grizzlies rolled past the Magic 126-109, and here's the fantasy headline that matters: Ja Morant showed up like he's got something to prove this season, dropping 50.5 Yahoo points while running the offense like a man possessed. But the real story? Jock Landale came off the bench and absolutely cooked for 42.1 Yahoo FP in just 22 minutes. That's not a fluke. That's a usage alert.

Tonight's Top Performers

Player Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg vs Avg
Ja Morant 50.5 24/5/13 on 54% FG 19.3/3.3/7.8 +4.7 pts, +5.2 ast
Wendell Carter Jr. 43.4 18/7/4 on 55% FG 12.5/7.7/2.2 +5.5 pts, +1.8 ast
Jock Landale 42.1 21/8/3 on 82% FG 11.3/6.3/1.7 +9.7 pts, +1.3 reb
Paolo Banchero 35.1 16/8/9 on 35% FG 20.9/8.8/5.0 -4.9 pts, +4.0 ast
Jaren Jackson Jr. 30.0 17/5/0 on 47% FG 18.8/5.5/1.8 -1.8 pts

The Winners

Ja Morant absolutely went off with 50.5 Yahoo FP, nearly 5 points above his season average despite lower assist numbers than usual. The thing is, he was efficient as hell (7-13 FG, 7-9 FT), which tells you he wasn't just chucking. This is the Ja we drafted, not the version grinding through mid-season ruts. 13 assists in 28 minutes is textbook Morant control.

Wendell Carter Jr. was the Magic's bright spot, dropping 43.4 FP with 18 points and four threes. He's been solid this season (12.5 PPG), but adding 5.5 points above his average shows he's got a higher ceiling than people think. 32 minutes and efficient shooting is the kind of game that makes you want to hold through the dips.

But here's the sneaky one: Jock Landale put up 42.1 FP in 22 minutes on 9-11 shooting. That's +9.7 points vs his 11.3 average. Yeah, he's only getting 22 minutes, but when a big man is that efficient in limited run, it's worth monitoring. Landale's been a fringe roster guy all season, but tonight proved he can punish when given the chance.

The Letdowns

Paolo Banchero shot 7-20 from the field and scored 16 points, which feels way off for a 20.9 PPG season average. He did add 9 assists (way above his 5.0 average), so fantasy didn't completely crater at 35.1 FP, but the shooting was rough. One bad game isn't panic time, but this is the second time in three games he's struggled from the field. Monitor the shot selection next time out.

Jaren Jackson Jr. was quiet on both ends. 17 points is solid, but he's averaging 18.8, and zero assists for a guy who usually contributes on that end is a red flag. He got his blocks and steals (1 and 2), so the defense was there, but this feels like a night where he was just filling a role rather than dominating.

The Trends

The Grizzlies are getting healthy and it shows. Ja's minutes are staying in the 28-range, which is reasonable load management, but he's doing more with less. The real shift is Landale getting consistent opportunities. If Brandon Clarke and Zach Edey keep dealing with injuries or minutes limits, Landale could genuinely become a pickup target on waiver wires.

For the Magic, Desmond Bane is picking things up (27.3 FP), and Anthony Black had a solid 26.4 FP with 19 points, showing depth. But Banchero's 7-20 shooting is the only thing that should worry you here. One-game sample, but watch his next two outings.

The Moves

Add: Jock Landale (if available). He just proved he can produce in the 20-40 minute range. In deeper leagues where he's sitting on waivers, grab him now. Even in 10-man leagues, if the Grizzlies keep running him out there, he's got value.

Hold Ja Morant. Nobody panic. This is who you drafted. One great game after some slower weeks doesn't mean sell low. He's locked in and the assists were nasty tonight.

Watch Paolo's shooting. One bad night is noise, but 7-20 the second time in a week? That's a pattern forming. Keep an eye on whether this is a slump or a bigger issue. Don't panic trade yet, but be ready to move him if this keeps up.

Next Up

Memphis and Orlando both play again in the next 48 hours. Ja's going to get more floor time as the season gets tighter, and Landale's role is worth tracking. For the Magic, Banchero needs to shake off the shot clock and get back to his efficient self. If he's back to 50% FG next game, he's still your guy. If not, start having conversations about an upgrade.
