Urgent Advice Jan 18: Grayson Allen and Today's Must-Know Moves

The Waiver Wire Is Your Best Friend Right Now

Grayson Allen sitting on your waiver wire is basically free money at this point. I'm watching him drop 20-plus points in three of his last five games, and somehow he's still available in nearly half of all leagues. The minutes are there (31 per game over the past two weeks), the threes are falling, and Phoenix desperately needs his shooting with their inconsistent offense. If you're not adding him, you're missing out on one of the cleanest pickup opportunities we've had all season.

But Allen isn't the only name that should have you scrambling to your waiver claims. Naji Marshall in Dallas has quietly become essential to their rotation, and the usage is climbing every week. With Luka Dončić drawing so much defensive attention, Marshall is getting clean looks and convert opportunities that weren't there earlier in the season. He's averaging 12 points and 5 rebounds over his last seven games, but more importantly, he's playing 28 minutes consistently. That floor is rock solid for deeper leagues.

The Injury Cascade You Need to Track

Here's where my day job comes in handy. When I see players going down with lower leg injuries this time of year, I immediately start mapping out the domino effects. Danny Wolf has been getting whispers as a potential add, but I'm telling you right now that his value hinges entirely on whether the injury situation ahead of him creates consistent minutes.

The key with these injury-driven pickups isn't just grabbing the immediate replacement. It's understanding how long these guys will actually be relevant. Ankle sprains in January can linger for weeks, especially when teams start thinking about playoff positioning versus player health. If you're adding someone purely because of an injury replacement role, make sure you understand the timeline you're working with.

Stop Overthinking These Obvious Adds

Christian Braun is another name that keeps popping up in the most-added lists, and frankly, it's about time. Denver's been giving him real run, and he's responding with consistent production across multiple categories. The steals are there (1.4 per game over the past two weeks), the rebounds are solid for a guard, and he's not killing your percentages. Sometimes the best fantasy adds aren't the flashy 25-point explosion guys. They're the steady contributors who give you 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal every night.

I keep seeing managers chase the boom-or-bust lottery tickets while ignoring these consistent role players. That's backwards thinking, especially as we head into the stretch run where you need reliability over ceiling.

The Sell-High Window Is Closing

If you've been riding the Anfernee Simons wave, now might be the time to cash out. His scoring has been excellent, but Portland's going to start getting healthier, and those usage rates are going to come back down to earth. I'm not saying he becomes worthless, but if someone's offering you legitimate value based on his recent hot streak, listen to the offer.

Same logic applies to some of these recent waiver darlings. When a player goes from 15 minutes per game to 30 minutes overnight due to injuries, that's not always sustainable. The smart play is recognizing which guys have earned permanent roles versus which ones are just keeping seats warm.

Deep League Gold Mining

For those of you in 14-team leagues or deeper, Gradey Dick deserves a long look if he's somehow still available. Toronto's been giving him opportunities to prove himself, and his three-point shooting alone makes him valuable in deeper formats. He's not going to fill up the stat sheet, but in leagues where you're scraping for production, his minutes and shot attempts give him a solid floor.

The pattern I'm seeing with a lot of these deeper adds is teams finally committing to developing their younger players as playoff hopes fade. That creates opportunity for fantasy managers willing to dig past the obvious names.

Schedule Streaming Strategy

Looking ahead to next week, keep an eye on teams with favorable schedules and depleted rotations. The combination of volume and opportunity is what creates those random 40-point fantasy nights that can win you a week. I'm not talking about chasing last week's hot hand. I'm talking about identifying situations where decent players are going to get extended run due to circumstances.

The managers winning leagues right now aren't the ones who drafted perfectly. They're the ones making smart waiver moves and staying ahead of the injury news. This time of year, your success comes down to how quickly you can identify value and how willing you are to cut players who've lost their roles.

Stop letting good players sit on waivers because you're attached to the guy you drafted in round eight. That player's draft position means nothing in January. What matters is who's actually producing and who has the clearest path to consistent minutes moving forward.
