Jimmy Butler Turned Madison Square Garden Into Chase Center Last Night

Look, I'm not gonna sugarcoat this. Jimmy Butler absolutely cooked the Knicks last night, and it wasn't even close. 32 points on 14-22 shooting, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals in 31 minutes. That's 53.6 Yahoo fantasy points when he's averaging 20.1/5.6/4.9 on the season. He beat his scoring average by nearly 12 points. The dude was in a different gear entirely, and if you own Jimmy in any format, you just cashed a lottery ticket.

But here's the thing that has me nervous for Warriors fans like me: this game exposed how much New York's defense struggled without their full arsenal. The real story isn't just that Jimmy went off. It's that the Knicks' top scorer didn't show up at all. More on that in a second.

Tonight's Top Performers

Player Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg vs Avg
Jimmy Butler III 53.6 32/8/4/2/0 20.1/5.6/4.9 +11.9 pts
Karl-Anthony Towns 48.0 17/20/2/1/1 20.9/11.5/2.9 +8.5 reb
Stephen Curry 44.1 27/3/7/1/1 28.1/3.8/4.9 +2.1 ast
Miles McBride 34.6 25/3/6/0/0 13.0/2.6/2.7 +12.0 pts
OG Anunoby 33.3 25/4/1/1/0 15.9/5.4/2.1 +9.1 pts
Brandin Podziemski 31.0 19/5/2/2/0 11.9/4.4/3.1 +7.1 pts

The Winners

Jimmy Butler III didn't just beat his average, he obliterated it. 32 points on 64% shooting with efficient free throw work. This isn't some empty calories game either, that's two-way production. If Butler keeps this energy up, he's a top-20 asset the rest of the way. The concern is durability, but last night he looked like the two-way wing you drafted him to be.

Karl-Anthony Towns put up 17 points and 20 rebounds. Yeah, you read that right. Twenty boards as a center on 14 shots is absolutely elite. He's a 11.5 rebounder on the season, so grabbing 8.5 extra is legitimately special. That's the kind of night that swings a fantasy week. Towns was a monster on the glass.

Miles McBride coming off the bench and dropping 25 points on 6 threes? That's the kind of performance that gets guys added in leagues. He's normally a 13 PPG guy, so being 12 above his average in just 36 minutes is worth monitoring. The minutes were there and he made the most of it.

The Letdowns

Here's where it stings for Knicks owners. Jalen Brunson didn't play. That's a massive red flag if you're rolling with him. All-NBA Second Team last season, and he's completely unavailable for a crucial divisional matchup. That's not a "game decision" situation, something's clearly wrong. If you have him, you need clarity on his status ASAP because this could be a lingering issue.

On the flip side, OG Anunoby played 37 minutes and got his points (25, +9.1 vs avg), but his one assist in 37 minutes? That's concerning for someone who usually facilitates more. He was a volume scorer last night, not a playmaker. It's one game, so don't panic, but if OG's role shifts purely to scoring without the secondary creation, his ceiling changes.

The Trends

The real trend here is role expansion. Brandin Podziemski is your new Warriors closer. 25 minutes, 19 points, 7.1 above his average. He's shooting 8-9 from the field. That's role clarity. Meanwhile, Moses Moody was also up with 21 points on 7-10 shooting with 7 threes. Moody's at +10.4 vs his average. Both these Warriors wings are getting more usage, which is huge for fantasy.

For the Knicks, Miles McBride getting extended run without Brunson on the floor is something to track. If that's the new dynamic, he becomes a much more interesting streamer in points leagues.

The Moves

Add Miles McBride in anything deeper than 10 teams. With Brunson out, he's getting starter minutes and just proved he can go off. Worst case he goes back to bench minutes when Brunson returns, but right now he's a legitimate pickup.

Drop OG Anunoby. He's being dropped league-wide and for good reason. His assist rates are declining and he's looking more like a scorer now, which limits his ceiling. In a crowded Knicks offense, he's redundant. Better targets exist.

Add Brandin Podziemski if he's available. Role expansion, minutes trending up, efficiency is there. He just went from role player to rotation core in one night.

Next Up

Warriors face the Cavaliers next. If Curry stays in this rhythm and the Wings continue getting run, this is a squad that can compete. Knicks need to figure out the Brunson situation immediately because without him, they're scrambling.
