Amen Thompson Just Took Over the Rockets' Offense and It's a Problem for Your Bench

Okay so the Rockets got cooked 111-98 by Sacramento on Monday, but here's what actually matters for your fantasy squad: Amen Thompson just went absolutely nuclear and nobody's talking about the role shift this represents. Dude dropped 31 points on 50.6 Yahoo points, +12.3 above his season average. That's not a good game. That's a statement. And if you're holding depth on the Rockets, you need to pay attention to what's happening here.

Tonight's Top Performers

Player Yahoo FP Tonight Season Avg vs Avg
Amen Thompson 50.6 31/13/6 18.7/7.7/5.1 +12.3 pts, +5.3 reb
Alperen Sengun 43.8 19/9/4 21.5/9.0/6.5 -2.5 pts
Kevin Durant 35.8 23/4/6 25.9/5.4/4.4 -2.9 pts, +1.6 ast
Russell Westbrook 37.2 15/6/10 14.8/6.5/7.0 +0.2 pts, +3.0 ast
DeMar DeRozan 33.4 22/2/6 19.1/3.4/3.9 +2.9 pts
Precious Achiuwa 30.9 10/7/3 7.5/5.5/1.2 +2.5 pts

Thompson's performance is the only story here. 11-17 from the field, 9-12 from free throw, 41 minutes. That's efficiency and volume. His season average is solid at 18.7/7.7/5.1, but going +12.3 on points? That's nearly 70 percent better than his normal output. The question is whether this is Thompson finally clicking or a one-off against a Sacramento defense that got comfortable.

The Winners

Amen Thompson is the only real winner tonight, and honestly, he's a winner your league probably hasn't noticed yet. If he's still sitting in waivers or on benches in shallower leagues, move fast. That 41 minutes and offensive load suggest Houston's getting serious about featuring him. Yes, the Rockets lost, but Thompson's individual performance was elite.

Russell Westbrook put up 37.2 Yahoo points on basically average output (15/6/10), which tells you the assist volume is real even when he's not scoring. The +3.0 assists vs his 7.0 average is interesting, though. Russ ran the offense in this one, and if Houston keeps using him this way, he's a sneaky deep league contributor. Don't overpay in a trade though, he's aging and inconsistent.

The Letdowns

Alperen Sengun underperformed big time. 43.8 Yahoo points sounds decent until you realize he's a 21.5/9.0/6.5 guy. Going -2.5 on points and -2.5 on assists while shooting 8-20 is brutal for a guy of his caliber. The Rockets got exposed defensively and Sengun couldn't impose his will. Keep him, obviously, but if someone lowballs you in a trade, think about it. This is the kind of game that happens when your team's defense leaks.

Kevin Durant also came up short at 35.8 points, -2.9 vs his 25.9 average. Shot 9-18 with four threes but couldn't get to his normal scoring volume. Sacramento's perimeter defense tightened up in the second half and KD couldn't break through. Still a stud, but worth noting he went quiet when the Rockets needed him most.

The Trends

The Kings are getting contributions from role players now. Precious Achiuwa is suddenly relevant, putting up 30.9 Yahoo points on a 7.5/5.5/1.2 average. That's +2.5 on points and +1.5 on rebounds. He played 38 minutes, which means Sacramento's giving him run. If you're in a deep league, Achiuwa just cracked the radar. He's up 4.3 percent in ownership, meaning people noticed.

Houston's problem is bigger though. They got smoked on the glass and couldn't control the paint. Sengun was limited to 35 minutes, and the bench rotation got exposed. Steven Adams saw 23 minutes and couldn't make an impact (12.7 Yahoo points). This is a team searching for identity, and Thompson's breakout might've been a desperation play by the coaches rather than a sustainable shift.

The Moves

Add Precious Achiuwa if he's available. Yeah, he just went up in ownership, but he's still under 8 percent owned in most leagues. That minute load (38) and stat line suggest Sacramento's committing to him as a rotation piece. One game doesn't make a season, but the trend matters.

Drop Josh Okogie if you have him. Dude played 9 minutes and scored 1.2 Yahoo points. That's not a role. The Rockets are tightening rotation, and Okogie's not in the core. Don't waste bench space.

Trade Alperen Sengun if the value is right. I'm not saying bail on him, but a team desperate for assists might overpay for a center who put up a stinker. Use that name brand while you can. Sengun's definitely capable of 40+ point nights, but his consistency is becoming a real question.

Next Up

The Rockets need to figure out their defense immediately. Sacramento exploited them all night, and that's not changing unless something shifts structurally. Thompson's usage spike is worth tracking, because if it's real, guys like Sengun get fewer touches. Sacramento's rolling right now, so they're playoff teams. Both squads play again soon, keep an eye on Thompson's minutes and if the Rockets stay attached to this new offensive philosophy.
